Bela Lugosi

One last tidbit before I put Halloween to bed. Bela Lugosi is the original Dracula. Bela Lugosi is legendary.

He died in 1956 of a heart attack but his legend lives on. He has had songs written about him most notably by Peter Murphy and Bauhaus called Bela Lugosi's Dead.and Celluloid Heros by the Kinks,

In movies Lugosi has been relived through the movie Ed Wood in which Tim Burton tries to interpret the relationship between Ed Wood and Lugosi.

There is a ton of reading out there as well about Lugosi if this sparks and interest. For now enjoy the Bauhaus interpretation of Lugosi:

Top 10 Destinations for A-Rod (With a Jays Fans Perspective)

There was an article on Yahoo listing the top 10 destinations for A-Rod. Well I'm putting a Blue Jays fans perspective on it:

1. LA Angels: Okay Im not totally anti Angels, hes out of the AL East and if the Angels spend the $25-30 million to get him, I wish them luck with piecing together a pitching staff. So go ahead spend your money and take a risk that him and your offense is going to score enough to make up for a lack of pitching.

2. LA Dodgers: Fine, its in the NL, out of sight out of mind. Though the Dodgers might be one of the few teams in the NL besides the Mets who have the ability to thumb their nose at baseball's pathetic excuse for a salary cap and spend like the Yankees.

3. San Francisco: Again, fine its the NL out of sight out of mind. However, I would have to question San Francisco's desire to have A-Rod. They just got rid of one super slugger that couldn't take them to the World Series why do they want to put all their eggs in one basket again? They need more than just A-Rod to get to the World Series. Omar Vizquel is old and won't be a gold glove short stop forever and their pitching isn't exactly stellar.

4. Chicago Cubs: Same as above in terms of going to NL. To me it makes sense for the Cubs. They have a pitching staff that is half way decent and they have money to spend way above the salary cap. This to me seems like the most obvious destination for A-Rod.

5. New York Yankees: Hell NO! Get him out of there, anywhere but NY.

6. New York Mets: See Above

7. Detroit Tigers: Why? They have a balanced team already. Why do you want to throw your whole team out of whack over one guy? Detroit at least would get him out of the AL East.

8. Boston Red Sox: See the NY Teams. That and the Red Sox created the curse of the A-Rod in 2004, why do you want to reverse that curse and sign the guy?

9. Florida Marlins: ROFLMFAO, Florida spend that much? Are you kidding? Who made this list?

10. Texas Rangers: They just got off the hook for half the guys salary why do you want to ante up and pay the whole thing? Especially since the whole reason for dumping him in the first place was so you would have more money for pitching which you still don't have and you want to put yourself back in that hole.....I don't get that, does George W. Bush still own the team?

Humble and Fred Podcasts

Being here in Western New York we have the pleasure of getting a lot of Canadian media this way. Back in the late 80's-early 90's I got hooked onto Humble and Fred via CFNY 102.1. They were hilarious. Where ever I was I would get out my wire coat hanger and hook it up to my antenna just so I could get the signal of CFNY. Id even tape the show after I left for work/school just so I could listen to it later. I still have most of those tapes too.

I like Toronto Mike was a huge fan of the Humble and Fred show and was pleasantly surprised to hear the podcasts they did last year and it was like they never missed a beat and even added a bit of the old school show by having Dan Duran be a part of it which was awesome. Together H&F are two of the goofiest, funniest and nicest guys you'll ever hear. They have this chemistry that just clicks and they are truly amazing at it when they get on the same mic.

Mike Boon has posted the podcasts at http://www.torontomike.com/humbleandfred/ Trust me check them out, even if your not a fan or have never heard, there are old clips from past shows that are just as funny now as they were back in the day. Thanks to Mike too for posting those again especially with the holiday season fast approaching nothing says Christmas like the H&F show.

Humble and Fred both have their own blogs (which are both linked on my page) too and going to read theirs each day is like getting the Humble and Fred show in print every day.

All I can say is PLEASE guys do the podcasts again!!!!! We loved them...Even if its everyother month do them again! It was so cool hearing you two again last year.

Pumpkin Beer

I am sitting down right now with a fresh just opened Harvest Moon Pumpkin Ale. Its a darker beer, amber in color and has a pumpkin spice flavor that hits as it goes down.

Not bad, a bit of sweetness that makes it a pleasantly good beer. I may have to add this one to my fall favorites. May have to introduce this one to the Thanksgiving day table this year.

Cassette to MP3

This is IT! I have been waiting for this for a year now and its finally out. http://www.plusdeck.com/. This website features an external drive that plugs into your laptop via a USB cable and will convert cassette directly to MP3.

If you are like me and you still have cassettes laying around and never got a CD recorder component for your system this is a must. You can store all your old analog stuff as MP3s. In addition to that it has AM/FM radio so you can actually record from the radio to MP3.

I have literally hundreds of cassettes with cool stuff on them and stuff I have not bought on CD that I want to keep and this finally makes it possible. I have some of the old Humble and Fred Christmas Spectacular shows and loads of old CFNY stuff on cassette with great tunes that I have been wanted to get saved and off cassette.

Stay tuned for more on this as it gets closer to a reality.

I believe it runs somewhere around $300. Christmas is coming, Christmas is coming!.

Everyday is Halloween

Easily my favorite Halloween song of all time. Ministry's Everyday is Halloween. Certain artists write a song that at that time of year it gets heavy airplay just for the theme. U2's New Years Day is an example of one and this song by Ministry is another. Its got a catchy 80's synth pop beat to it yet lyrically its all Halloween. Enjoy and Happy Halloween!

Real or Not?

Some jack ass in Ridgeway, PA thinks he found it! He found bigfoot. Every year around this time sightings of bigfoot seem to emerge. Last year in late summer some guy in Clarence thought he saw Bigfoot.

Looks like this guy bought the same costume as the dude in Clarence and took some pictures of it. Nice try. What do you think? Real or Not Real?

Fantasy Hockey Update

The Road Apples when 5-5-2 last week to stay above .500. Im still in 5th place and playing what should be a much weaker opponent this week. My overall record: 23-20-5, theirs: 10-31-7.

Last week Eric Staal lead my team with 6 points, 3 goals and 3 assists and Jason Pominville and Brendan Morrow each had 5 point weeks.

In goal Vesa Toskala had 2 wins as did Henrik Lundqvist and both have been consistent at least.

I picked up Jose Theodore hopefully he will start to produce in Colorado as he gets a shot at the starting job.

Overall not bad but I need a big week to get up in the top three in the league. Once Im there I have a blockbuster trade to unleash but I have to be patient before I spring it. Ill let you know when I do it.

Gore Energy Usage

Ive really started getting into Keith Olberman, he was great on ESPN and it took him a while but he has finally found his place on MSNBC. Here he talks about the Gore's energy usage. Those republicans and global warming nay sayers always bring this up. Al Gore uses more energy in his house than most Americans....Well yes, his house is bigger, but Olberman here addresses the rest of the story, pay attention and eliminate this from your future global warming arguments.

Threats Falling on Deaf Ears...

Keith Olberman hit it right on the nose with this segment. The threats of terror brought up by the Bush administration and Fox News have become laughable. The terror targets brought up by Bush himself in this segment are ridiculous because as Keith mentions himself, he gets the name of the target wrong in LA.

Give it up already. The Bush administration has made a living and gotten reelected on fear tactics and the further they go, the more they alienate the majority of Americans and divide this country.

The story about Al Qaeda starting the California fires that Fox News brought up was an old story in an Arizona paper and the threats were originally supposed to take place during the summer.

Heres the Olberman clip. The more I watch the sicker I get that we have Fox News feeding us this crap and Bush in office still.

California Burning

Because of Al Qaeda? Thats what Fox News would have you believe in this clip. Are they really that desparate for news and stirring up the American Public? I heard about this and decided to post it just so we can all see how idiotic this station is and how irresponsible they are when it comes to reporting.

Anything to support the Bush agenda on Fox News. Its dispicable. Wild fires happen EVERY YEAR in California. They are not terrorist plots. Most wild fires are started by lightning after prolonged droughts. This year has been extremely dry in California and has been waiting to go up in smoke.

Here is the clip from the geniuses at Fox....Jon Stewart suggested that maybe the next terror plot is to staff our cable new networks with idiots, may hes right.

GOP Presidential Debate

"All of us on the stage are Republican. But the question is, who will be able to build the house that Ronald Reagan built — who will be able to strengthen that house, because that's the house that's going to build the house that Clinton, Hillary, wants to build," Romney said

Mitt Romney made me dizzy with this quote. I read it and today I heard it. What kind of drugs was he on?

If you have any plans to vote for him, cross him off your list. I have plans to vote for none of the candidates you see above, but Romney really lost me there. He has no clue. He has no clue on any of the issues and when he is actually challenged with questions unlike those of Chris Wallace who is the worst person to ask these guys questions, he stumbles.

Fox News Republican Debate Healthcare

Healthcare is pricy and everyone is concerned. Why are these guys so insistent on putting health care into the hands of private coorporations?

Because those same coorporations Phizer, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Merck just to name a few are FOR PROFIT. They keep prices up to make a profit. Why do we have a system that profits off people who are sick?

ALL HEALTH CARE whether its a drug company, health insurance, nursing home or hospital should be non profit. That immediately drives down cost. If it takes Government run universal health care plan to do it, so be it.

The only gripe in Canada about universal health care is about wait times for major operations. Well if thats the only problem sign us up. Im sure there is enough brain power to fix that one flaw.

How many would sign up for knowing that employed or unemploted we could walk into our doctor's office and not have to worry about paying for it?

I think what really scares people about the thought is change and having to go through the changes it would take to create that system.

Can We Just Have Music Videos Please?

I can't help but notice that VH1 Classic has been going to way of all other music television stations over the last year. Music videos are now at a premium on VH1 Classic and its kind of annoying.

What is wrong with doing what they were doing? They had their video blocks that features various eras of Rock videos like 70's, 80's and all request and my personal favorite their alternative block.

What happened? I watched when there was actualy music videos, not some conglomerate of made up shows and MTV rehash of unplugged. Do we really need VH1 Classic to go this route? if so we need a VH1 Classic 2 because between MTV2, MTV, VH1 and VH1 Classic, not one plays all music videos. Thats sad.

Honestly, Im just not interested in shows featuring the reforming of the talentless all female metal band Vixen which was exactly what was on VH1 Classic the other day. If Vixen has become "classic" we are in trouble.

No wonder Youtube has become increasing popular at least there you can find music videos by talented artists.

Beer Me

This time of year I start to think of the darker stouts like Guiness. This one fits the bill nicely. I was introduced to this beer last year and tried it and loved it.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is a flavorful stout that leaves almost a hot chocolate flavor in the back of the throat as it goes down.

Its very rich and has a very different taste to it and is a nice beer to add to the traditional oatmeal stouts like Guiness that can get old after awhile. And besides that, whats better than a chocolate beer for Halloween. Chocolate doesn't have to be for just kids.

Two In Florida for Buffalo

Sabres Logo

Okay, thats better. I always get nervous when Buffalo plays the Panthers because the Panthers play the trap and Buffalo doesn't play well against those kind of teams.

This weekend was huge, a confidence booster for a team that needed one after three losses in a row and no wins on the road. This weekend they got two road wins and both were of a come from behind variety.

Last night they didn't lead until Thomas Vanek scored in overtime, but they battled back from deficits and kept tying the game and didn't let Tampa rest. This is the team we all know and love here in Buffalo.

Ryan Miller has looked much better the last two games as well putting up the stone wall last night against Tampa and he made some key saves against Florida Friday night. They are still in last place but they are back at .500.

In the infamous words of Bill Murray in What About Bob...baby steps!

Evolutionary Changes to Humans.....

This article suggests humans may split into two species.

A scientist has suggested that humans will split into a smart, attractive, ruling species and another that is ugly, dumb and goblin like.

Now, I believe in evolution but this is taking it a little too far. Oliver Curry the scientist who suggested this thinks that our species will reach its peak by the year 3000.

I think that we already have reached our peak. We have hit peak oil, we are at the brink of a potential energy crisis and global warming is becoming an insurmountable challenge the longer our elected officials take to develop responsible energy policies and work together on solutions.

Sorry to sound so depressing on a Sunday but hey this article got me thinking. Maybe this guy is off by 1000 years on his prediction. Maybe we hit our peak in the year 2000.

Flutie Thoughts

Freddie P. posted a little on Doug Flutie today and I have to agree with him. He talked about how Buffalo didn't appreciate him and hes right on.

Flutie was the last quaterback to lead the Bills to the playoffs. I remember that year well because my friend Rich and I watched every game at Shannon's Pub and the talk of the town was Flutie-Johnson.

We couldn't believe when Forest Gump Wade Philips put Rob Johnson in for the playoff game and cost Buffalo the game. Flutie was clearly the better quarterback and to me there was no controversy.

It was made up by the media, the fans and Wade Philips for not making up his dumb mind. Flutie played well down the stretch and gave the Bills a chance to compete in the playoffs while Rob Johnson rode the bench because of injuries all season.

Flutie was a true champion here in Buffalo and accepted it but he shouldn't have. He should have spoken up more and made a bigger stink about it. Freddie hit it right on the head and that team was destined to lose when that decision was made.

Congradulations to Doug Flutie, he was a class act.

Swim Meet This Weekend

For those who don't know, in addition to my full time job as a Physical Therapist, I also attend graduate school for a masters in special education and I coach competitive swimming.

This weekend, starting tonight in about an hour is the first short course meet of the 2007/2008 season. Short course is just our way of saying we are swimming distances in yards not meters.

So, that said, my posts may be spotty this weekend and next though I will try to touch base this weekend more so on Sunday than Saturday but I will check in.

Next weekend may be a bit more challenging as we have a meet in Brockport, NY which is just outside Rochester and about an hour or so away. I am still debating whether to try to get a hotel room for that one so I don't have to drive out at 6 AM. If I do....I will not be posting next weekend. I will fill everyone in on how my kids do both this weekend and next.

Editing the Truth

The Bush administration attack on science continues. Scientists are currently testifying to congress on the impact  global warming has on our health.

While this was going on deletions were made to their testimony. The original testimony of 14 pages has been edited down to 6 pages.

Either officials in the administration are great at summarizing or they are cutting out data that would prove that they actually have to do something about the problem. They eliminated all references to global warming being a public health concern.

Unbelievable. For an administration that believes in the apocalypse and creationism word for word as it is in the bible its no surprise that they would allow this kind of an approach. Global warming is basically agreed upon by all in the legitimate scientific community. What isn't agreed upon are specific weather pattern models.

But when it comes to the health of the American public don't we have a right to know with out 8 pages being edited?

"What was cut was the section with the details -- the most detailed sections on the health impact of global warming, including descriptions of the links that are coming out of the IPCC report." There was overwhelming agreement in the scientific community that the information was in no way alarmist or controversial."

How sad that this administration still thumbs their nose at this. No wonder people have so many differing views on global warming and can't agree whether its happening or not. We can't even get our own government to release the correct scientific data and information to us so that we can read the truth about whats going on and make up our own minds.

The fact is this administration is knee deep in cooperate lobbyists and doing something would mean costing major cooporations like oil companies and energy companies money to help fix the problem. Instead the administration is intent on staying the course with their garbage science policies and garbage energy polices and costing the American public knowledge and their health.

Bush Shows Up In California

"There's all kinds of time for historians to compare this response or that response," he said. "I'm thinking about people whose lives turned upside down. The experts can try to figure out if the response was perfect."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071025/us_nm/california_wildfire_bush1_dc_2

President Bush strolled into California today alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger who looked a hell of a lot more and sounded a lot more like a president than the one we have now.

There were lots of references made to Katrina and how he has learned from that disaster effort. Well after reading the above article you continue to see what a fool the president is. Not to mention the appearance that he constantly tries to portray with the tough guy sleeves rolled up look to the conservative right wing voting base.

The quote at the top came right out of his mouth. We are still talking about the Katrina response because it was piss poor. The fact is that perfect or not, the response should have been better because people are supposed to trust in their government to come to their aid in times of emergency.

What is happening in California isn't because the federal response has been better, its because California deals with wild fires ALL THE TIME. They are ready for it! Maybe not on this magnitude but they know how to handle these situations without the help of the idiot in the White House.

Maybe if he would have put people in charge of FEMA who were actually qualified to do their jobs the response would have been better and we'd never be having this conversation.

Yet another example of how this administration is totally clueless. If I were a resident of California Id take his being there as an insult. Id hold my hand out and say just write the checks so we can rebuild our homes and be on your merry way.

California has been burning for a week and just now he shows up and even speaks about it?

The response is no better. Give me a break and get this guy out of office.

The Apple Diet?

NEW ORLEANS — The next diet craze may be the apple diet.

A new study shows an apple a day keeps the calories at bay. People who ate an apple about 15 minutes before lunch consumed almost 190 fewer calories than when they didn't have the apple.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-10-23-apple-diet_N.htm

Why is it that we have to try to come up with the one food or the one fix solves all diet here in the States?

It was the "Atkins Diet" all protein no carbs!,Which was total bullshit because yes you may lose weight but then die of a heart attack.  Then the South Beach Diet which is essentially the starve yourself diet which is wrong too because as soon as you stop this diet, you rebound and eat like a monster anyway.

Now its the Apple Diet. Thats it one food solves all the fat asses problems in this world.

Now Im not one to talk because goodness knows I could stand to lose a few, however, what is wrong with just a balanced lifestyle. Eat a healthy balanced diet and workout.

Its mind boggling to think of all these crazy diets that people think will cure all their fat worries with no exercise just eat all protein and the pounds will melt off. Its not that simple. Its not just apples. Of course the mainstream media will probably take this and promote it and the next thing you know well have the TGI Fridays Apple menu.

People are so short sighted in this country they will take that to mean you can't eat anything other than apples and apples alone. You still need to work to lose weight and the sooner this the US population figures this out the faster we will get in shape.

Guilty Pleasures

In one of my recent posts I mentioned wrestling.

I admit it, one of my guilty pleasures is WWE Monday Night RAW. I watch it. What now?

I know its fake, I know its sometimes down right awful acting by testosterone filled men. But I dig the story lines.

Realistically, is the "reality TV" that is on other stations much better? I mean really, Id feel worse if I were watching Dancing With The Stars or perhaps American Idol.? I can't stand those shows. Instead I choose WWE. At least they have good music and hot Divas between matches.

Slow Start

Sabres Logo

I got home from swim practice tonight only to watch Caroline score four unanswered in the third period.

What is happening to the Buffalo Sabres? This is not a bad team. They have shown that they can dominate when they want to.

The problem I think lies in trying to find a post Drury/Briere identity. The truth is, it should be the same identity they had with them.

They play fast in your face offensive hockey that attacks by getting their defense involved. What is getting them beat is that they are not skating to pucks and not using their speed in key situations.

Ryan Miller hasn't looked good in all but one game this year and at times it looks like hes fighting the puck. The other big thing is this team used to be so good at playing the shooting lanes and this year teams are getting pucks through and those pucks are getting to the net.

Half of the solution seems to be confidence. The confidence that they can play without the two captains. Its not a question of talent, this team has talent, its a question of confidence at this time.

What ever the solutions to these problems are they better find them fast because they are losing ground in the division and the conference.

$2.4 TRILLION DOLLARS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could cost taxpayers a total of $2.4 trillion by 2017 when counting the huge interest costs because combat is being financed with borrowed money, according to a study released on Wednesday.

With President George W. Bush indicating a large contingent of U.S. troops likely will be engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan for many years to come, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the total tab for the wars from 2001 through 2017.

CBO estimated that interest costs alone from 2001-2017 could total more than $700 billion.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071024/pl_nm/iraq_usa_funding_dc

Well that says it all...$2.4 TRILLION DOLLARS. (or half the New York Yankees budget). Our Idiot has put this country in the hole for the next 10 years.

Who ever gets elected President next is going to be stuck with the bill and the clean up and will probably need 8 years to clean it up before they can get anything they want to do done.

George W. has messed this country up good. Financially were in debt up to our collective eyeballs, he pisses on the environment, and he could care less about childrens health care. Im sorry if I seem bitter but this guy is a real piece of work.

We simply have to get him and Freddie's boy Dalton together......something tells me they would get along great!

Fantasy Hockey Update

Well The Road Apples (my team) after a dreadful 2-9 start in week one, are now over .500 after two winning weeks in a row. Last week I went 7-4 to break into early season playoff contention.

Last week Chris Campoli and Pavel Dimitra carried my team with 5 and 4 points respectively. My goaltending could use a boost. Otherwise its looking pretty solid after a disappointing start.

Its a long season. Staytuned for updates. I have a few Leafs including Vesa and Antropov that I will be rooting for throughout the year. Vesa, despite his down start had my only win for my team last week.

Go Rockies!

It would be easy for a Jays fan to root for whats familiar. The Red Sox are from the division and have some former Jays in their lineup in Hinske and Timlin.

However, Im not the easy type. Im rooting for the Rockies. Im just about as sick of the Sox as I am of the Yanks. The order of my "anybody but teams" goes: Anybody but the Yankees, Anybody But the Mets and Anybody But the Red Sox.

So for the next week to ten days, Im throwing aside the fact that Im a Jays fan to root for the Rockies to complete the elimination of the one "Anybody But" team left. That and to enjoy whats left this years boys of summer. Because as we all know the countdown to spring training, is one of the longest countdowns there is.

Beer Me

After a full 14 hour day, I need to unwind. Tonight I am enjoying one of these out of my Molson Pleasure Pack that I picked up at the Tax and duty free store a few weeks back.

I love Export. A little stronger than Canadian or Labatt Blue and it still maintains the ability to finish smooth and has a nice rich flavor to it. 9 times out of 10 if I don't have Sleeman's in my fridge, I head to Consumers beverages and pick up either Canadian or Export. Tonight I was in the Export kinda mood. This beer is easily in my top five favorite beers.

Im gonna go finish this and watch wrestling (More on that later).

I Got My Fixx Stix!

This past summer I saw the Fixx with the Alarm and the Psychadelic Furs. I have already posted a video of them and I can't say enough about how good their show was.

I wasn't a huge fan until seeing them this past summer and I was impressed with the way the band interacted with the audience during the show. They seemed to have a great connection with their fans and it shows on their website as well.

One thing they offer is the Fixx Stix. You can get any show downloaded onto a flashdrive and for $25 they send you the show you request. I of course requested the Fixx Stixx today and before I rest my weary head, Im downloading it to my I-Tunes.

I thought it was a unique way for the band to share the concert experience with their fans. I thought to myself how many concerts do you go to, get all tore up and forget about the details of the show all the subtle moments that make watching live performances so awesome.

I know I wish I could get back a lot of the Hip shows I went to after my mind was clouded by several beers. It would be cool to see more bands enact this idea.

When Mike Boon teaches me how to share MP3's, Ill share a track or two from the show.

Gay Dumbledore?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071021/ap_en_ot/books_potter_dumbledore

NEW YORK - With author J.K. Rowling's revelation that master wizard Albus Dumbledore is gay, some passages about the Hogwarts headmaster and rival wizard Gellert Grindelwald have taken on a new and clearer meaning.

Well after reading all 7 books without a thought and seeing all the movies without even an inkling that this would be the case, I ask this, who really needed to know?

The guy is an 80 something year old wizard. JK Rowling brings it up like the guy was blowing Tom Riddle (AKA Voldemort) in the books which is so not true....Right?

Even so, Its not something anyone needed to know nor does it have any relevance to the upcoming movies. Millions have read the books and seen the movies and everyones jaws are currently resting on the floor as they read about this turn of events in the Harry Potter saga.

Personally I think she came out with this for more publicity, the sales amongst gay men and women must have been slow.

Posting for me on Mondays is tough. I get out of work at 2:30 and I have an hour and a half before its time for me to get to graduate school which I attend until 10:00. This caught my attention though.

President Idiot is looking for more money. $46 billion more for Iraq. Where is the US getting this?

I hope congress puts an end to this. $46 billion could go a long way towards funding that childrens healthcare bill that the President vetoed. It could go a long way towards creating a universal healthcare system.

It could go a long way towards a lot of things here at home. Instead, we are sending it to continue a war that should have never been in the first place. Nice job Mr. President. Iraq is worth more to you than our children. Nice Job.

Here We Go Again....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071021/ts_nm/cheney_iran_dc

LEESBURG, Virginia (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday described Iran as an obstacle to peace in the Middle East and said the world could not stand by and allow it to develop a nuclear weapon. Cheney's comments underscored a ratcheting up of U.S. rhetoric toward Tehran and came just days after President George W. Bush warned that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War Three.

"The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose serious consequences," Cheney told a forum organized by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "The United States joins other nations in sending a clear message: We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

Does this seem like the same old thing all over again leading up to the invasion of Iraq? They can't possibly be serious about going and making the same mistakes all over again. The only difference between this and Iraq is that the international community is not buying it this time

We...we lol, Bush and Cheney have already managed to deteriorate the positive relations built up by Reagan, Bush Sr. and Clinton with Russia and they are working on China's nerves and have even managed to piss off Turkey as well.

I honestly can't believe they are considering military action. They are working with a depleted military and absolutely no support from US citizens, congress or the senate. It would be a mistake of huge proportions to do this again. The scariest thing is, that Iran may be stronger than Iraq and may have more allies to back them up. It really could be WWIII if Bush and Cheney are stupid enough.

I think they are. Lets hope not.

Finally, Honesty In an Athlete

BOSTON – Accused of purchasing human growth hormone and syringes for a period of three years through 2005, Cleveland Indians pitcher Paul Byrd contended Sunday that he was being treated for a tumor on his pituitary gland, took the drug under medical supervision and regretted that the story surfaced hours before Game 7 of the American League championship series.

In an email to Yahoo! Sports, Byrd wrote, "I'm not sure there is a story here since I didn't do anything illegal. The tragedy in all of this is the timing. I am in the bullpen tonight and don't want this to be a distraction for our team."

I believe all the above. Good for Paul Byrd for stepping up as soon as this story came out and putting it to bed. Im no Indians fan but I believe Paul Byrd. The fact he came out immediately and admitted he had it prescribed to him shows he has nothing to hide. Now lets put this story to rest now and get to baseball. There isn't much left!

What the Hell Happened to Katie Holmes?

Is she trying for the Elizabeth Taylor look here? She looks like shes about 50 in this picture and I can't help but feel for this poor kid having to grow up between her and her brain washed, scientologist husband.

Katie must be expecting a solar eclipse or something with those glasses. She looks like she plans on staring directly into the sun. I am going to make a bold prediction, she will be the next of the young starlets to go off the deepend in the coming year. Just a hunch.

Hockey Songs

I couldn't find a video on youtube nor get my hands on an MP3 but trust me this is a great hockey song. No one else could have written such a beautiful song about such a high energy sport.

This is Hockey by Jane Siberry

Winter time and the frozen river

Montreal 4 Buffalo 2

Im not ready to panic yet but this was a team that refused to lose two in a row the last few years. This year through 7 games, they have done it twice.

Its not the fact that they have done that twice, Its how they have lost. Buffalo has lost because they didn't use their best asset in their four losses against teams that they could easily beat if they had. Team speed. Buffalo is much faster than the Islanders, Columbus and Montreal.

What that tells me is a lack of effort has cost them their four losses. In all four losses there were spurts where this team looked like they could bowl over their opponents and take over the game. Last night was no exception. There were also their fair share of costly penalties which were due to not using their speed and instead hooking which will get you called everytime. Not to mention the lost races to loose pucks that cost them battles along the boards and icing calls

Time to kick it up a notch before this turns into a 3 game losing streak which would be a big time streak for this group. Time for new leaders to step up and make sure this kind of stuff doesn't happen.

As we saw last year a hot start can win the division, a slow one can cost you the playoffs.

Fantasy Hockey Update

Well, The Road Apples (My team) in the Lonely End of the Rink Fantasy Hockey league despite a slow 2-9 start recovered nicely in week 2 to go 9-2 and get back to .500

This week, The Road Apples are 7-3 going into Sundays play with Markus Naslund and Pavel Demitra going for me tonight. Luckily I don't have any goalies playing because that is my teams weakness right now,

Toskala has been bad at best though last night with Raycroft in and a disappointing loss for the Leafs may open the door to get Vesa a start or two.

7-3 should get me closer to the top as going into todays action the league leader at this point, Firefox was 3-8 so it should be a nice week to gain some ground and get back into early playoff contention.

Believe it or not Joe Thorton and Nik Antropov have carried my team. Yes Antropov in the same sentence as Joe Thorton Leaf Nation. Thorton with a 5 point week and Antropov had a 4 point week and was solid defensively with a plus 3. Keep it up Nik Antropov!

Buffalo is Big

Not in population but in the stomach. 61% of Western New York is fat according to a report on channel 2's website. The reasons are due to weather, food and an aging population. How about laziness? Im a big fan of that.

It's not just Buffalo thats bursting at the seams. Its all over the US. Kids, adults all of us. This country is large. I blame the video game for today's children for being chubby. Kids play too many video games and parents aren't in a big rush to get them participating in any organized sports.

For adults I think it boils down to an overworked area. Adults in this area, including myself spend too much time serving their employers and not enough time taking care of number one. It turns into stress which does not help losing weight.

Im making a change. Starting Monday Im starting my workout routine again. up at 5AM and to the gym. Im going to start swimming again as well. I don't want to be part of the problem in WNY, I would rather pull that 61% in the down direction.

MRSA Has Made It Out

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071020/ap_on_he_me/staph_infections

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Nine athletes and a coach at Iona College contracted an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, which has spread through schools nationwide, health officials said Friday.

I am a physical therapist and I can remember on one of my clinical affiliations back in the 1990's one of my clinical instructors told me to beware about MRSA. They said that if it makes it out of the hospitals look out. I never forgot that statement and here it is. Its out.

At the time it was confined to hospital/nursing home settings and under control. Lately its made it into the general public and remembering my CI's comments, its not a good thing. This bacteria is nasty. Many in the media will have you believe its something new. Its not its been there, it just hasn;t been outside the walls of healthcare institutions.

The fact that its running around schools is even scarier. The main transmission of this is going to be through cuts and lockerroom areas that are not sanitized.

Saturday at Frizb's

This weeks pull from Frizb's was actually an event. My friend Rich came with me. He is a fine local musician here in the Buffalo area that happens to love collecting music as much as I do. He came with me to get the Frizb's vibe and loved it.

$5 Saturdays. Cheap enough for used CD's where if you want to take a chance on something you have heard of before but weren't sure you don't mind putting down the $5 to check it out. Also a good way to get music you have always wanted but never had the money to get. So without further delay here is my Frizb's take home for the week:

Suede- Dog Man Star (arguably their best album but some would say its their second best.)

Tanya Donnelly- Lovesongs for Underdogs (Who could pass up her heavenly voice)

The Beatles- White Album (Starting to explore the Beatles more lately)

Blur- The Great Escape

The Cure- Disintegration (A Classic, mine was scratched beyond recognition from playing it so for $5 why not.

Led Zeppelin- Houses of the Holy (A classic I have always wanted)

New Order- Get Ready (One of their recent yet still great albums)

Our Lady Peace- Naveed (A must have out of their arsenal)

The Tea Party- Slendor Solis (Their debut)

Treble Charger- Maybe It's Me (another great Canadian band)

All told  $53.....Not a bad take home for $53. At Best Buy or somewhere else this lot would run well over $160.

Last Night's New Rules

Last nights new rules was one of the better ones as well. Bill Maher had alot to say about the Value's Candidate.

Bill Maher Kicks Ass

Last night on Real Time, Bill Maher had to take things into his own hands to get a heckler out of his show. The person in question was protesting with a smuggled in sign that read "9/11 is a cover up fraud" and shouted comments from the audience.

Bill Maher frequently has these protesters outside his show seeking to get in and this guy obviously did. The scene was quite exciting.

Separation of Church and State

After watching that video, Ive said it before and I'll say it again, churches should be taxed. They take in more money and with money come power and with power comes influence and we have seen it the last 6 years with George W. Idiots influence over this population.

The Evangelical Christians want to have their own "Values" Candidate in the 2008 election. Well if they are going to have that big of an influence over politics then it is time to tax them. The line of separation between church and state has been crossed.

They want creationism taught in public schools where children of all beliefs go to, not just christians, fine then time to start taxing your church for the influence over the educational system.

Church and religion need to stay out of public school classrooms other than learning about the cultural implications of religions in social studies. It certainly doesn't belong in science classrooms.

No other religion attempts to take over the American culture like Evangelical's after watching Friends of God on HBO you see the intolerance amongst them and how if you don't believe what they believe, you are evil or as one guy put it big time losers.

Someone Needs to Save These Kids

The kids are being brain washed in this video something terrible. One guy in this video who is made to look like a science teacher or something, actually states that he believes the Bible is the "History Book of the Universe". Scary. Save these kids before there is a generation who actually buys into this crap. The woman actually believe when she combines science and the bible it actually makes more sense. Great. Unbelievable.

The Saddest part is the kids are buying into it already. One can only hope that these kids actually develop their own opinions later in life instead of being fed crap like this.

Most Overrated Bands/Artists of All Time

One of my first blogs featured the most underrated bands of all time, this one will feature the bands who in my opinion are grossly overrated:

1. Bon Jovi- They top the list, by far and away the worst band and I don't understand hype. The music is average at best and most of the attention is because Jon Bon is some model lead singer.

2. Nickelback

3. Kid Rock

4. Puddle of Mud

5. Matchbox 20

Yep its the Same Paul Young.

World War III?

What kind of drugs is this idiot on lately? I want some. World War III? Is he serious even uttering the words?

This administration is so power hungry, their only chance to is keep us in a state of fear and keep this country at war. Russia has already come out backing Iran, China is going to back Iran if the US strikes because Iran supplies China with their energy.

On top of all that nonsense I heard today that the latest approval ratings came in at 24%. Clinton was at 68% during his impeachment for having sexual encounters with the chubby chick, which at this point seems like small potatoes compared to what Idiot has gotten us into.

To rub a little more salt in GW's wounds, Bill Clinton would never have vetoed children's health care bills. To put it simply this guy can't leave office too soon.

End of the Empire

The first and most important step in dismantling the empire is done. Joe Torre has quit and thank god. Now maybe the rest will follow. This was Torre's team, the players loved him and a move like this could spell huge changes for the Yankees in the offseason.

One player whose contract is up that I would love to see leave NY is Jorge Posada. Wouldn't it be nice to see Jorge Posada in a Jays uniform behind the plate taking care of the young pitchers we have? Nothing against Gregg Zaun, but I don't think he is starting catcher material and Jorge would make a nice transitional guy until Robinson Diaz is ready. Not to mention Posada can still hit for average and power.

Of Course They Are Related!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There's no sign of a family reunion planned, but U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama are distant cousins.

Of Course they are! Can't you see the similarities? I think this was dug up just to see if it would create enough of a stir to cost Obama votes from democrats.

Dice K=$52 Million Bust

I give the Cleveland Indians credit for beating the Sox last night but, had the Red Sox known that the $52 million that they spent just to talk to Dice K was going to result in them getting a number 3 starter whos second half would go in the dumper I think they would have thought twice about talking to him. He has been average at best.

Lets face it, this guy blew it last night. If 40 year old Kenny Lofton is lighting you up you have major problems. Maybe the length of the Major League schedule is getting to him. For $52 million just to talk, he better be able to pitch through it. I don't think the Red Sox spent that kind of dough to get a 13 game winner. I think they were expecting something of an ace. The fact is since the allstar break Dice K has been anything but an ace. He has blown games that a $52 million dollar just to talk to guy shouldn't be blowing.

The great thing is, the Red Sox are stuck with him and hopefully for the rest of MLB have learned their lesson in terms of handing out money just to negotiate. If thats the case what is Albert Puljos going to want to talk after his contract is up? A-Rod wants $30 million a year, but to talk to him you better have a $100 million dollar down payment, and thats just to sit in the same room with him.

BEER ME

As most of you know, I love beer. So I figure every week I'll write about a beer that I have either tried in the past or a new flavor that I have never had.

That said today I would like to say that when we were in college Milwaukee's Best was a frequent buy for us when the money wasn't available for more expensive better tasting beers. To be honest, as far as cheap beer goes, Milwaukee's Best was quite good. You could drink 30 of them and not feel a thing too!

So here is to the cheap beer we used to drink!

$100 oil?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil thundered to a new peak above $88 a barrel on Tuesday as investors eyeing supply concerns and tensions in northern Iraq extended the nine-dollar rally that started last week

After reading this article it is beginning to look like a reality.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071016/ts_nm/markets_oil_dc

What puzzles me is that gas prices were way higher after Katrina hit and oil prices weren't this high. Gas prices can't be far from surging themselves. We could be looking at $4.00 gas before Christmas if oil keeps surging.

Wouldn't that warm up the Christmas cheer!

Hillary has More Than Barack!

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton ended September with more money in the bank than rival Barack Obama, holding $35 million cash on hand for the presidential primary contests to his $32 million.

SO WHAT!

What is the big deal. This means about as much to me as a voter as what the religion of the candidates are. I don't care. We all know that in order to run for president it takes money and lots of it but do we really need to know?

I would rather see time spent on articles about issues. Instead the mainstream media feeds us this crap and thinks it matters how much money they have. Why does this matter in regards to Hillary and Barack? Why don't they do one on Romney and Gulliani? Or Fred Thompson and McCain.

Politics in this country has become so blurred by what the media makes it.

Sabres 5 Leafs 4

Sabres Logo

Sabres and Leafs gave us what we wanted as usual, a great show. The third period was wide open with lots of offense and little defense.

Who could have guessed? Another last second win for Buffalo!!!  This is getting old.

I feel sorry for the Leafs, their goaltending issues run deep, not matter who they put in whether its Raycroft or Toskala they just aren't getting it. Vesa needs to get the vote of confidence because Andrew is not the answer otherwise he would have shown it last year.

The Sabres are just amazing at this point. Spacek and Campbell are both on pace for well over 100 points each so far.

Saturdays at Frizbees

Frizbees is a record store about a block and a half away from my house. Saturdays is $5 per cd. The deal in used cds. Unlike most places they have some quality used selections. I got there everyother Saturday to check out whats in stock and pick up a few selections. It really is a good deal and a nice way to get new music into the collection. (and cheap too).

On the Saturdays I go I will share my Frizbees additions to my cd collection. Here is yesterdays haul:

Pulp- Countdown 1992-1983

The Tea Party- Transmission

Jan and Dean- All the Hits (Double CD for just $5)

The Beatles- Past Masters Volume 2

The Beatles- Anthology 3

Squeeze- The Singles

Trainspotting- The Soundtrack to the Movie Trainspotting

Not a bad take home for $35. The best thing about going to Frizbees is that for every 10 CDs you buy you get $10 off which you can use at any time. So I hit the 10 CD mark at number 3 this week so I actually got these for $25.

Stay tuned for future pick ups at Frizbees, Ill try to make this a regular.

Global Warming Update

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071012/ap_on_sc/nobel_widening_peace;_ylt=AtO8bVGf.cqOKLW6tGHezGwiANEA

"Climate change is and will be a significant threat to our national security and in a larger sense to life on Earth as we know it to be," retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, former U.S. Army chief of staff, told a congressional panel last month.

The Nobel Peace Prize Committee agrees. In awarding the prize Friday to climate campaigner Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N.-sponsored network of scientists, the Norwegian committee said the stresses of a changing global environment may heighten the "danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states."

Wow imagine that! If the US Army is stating that there may be problems due to global warming don't you think the Bush administration should start to wake up just a little?

The army has always been largely republican, however this administration has even gotten them voicing their opinions against them on everything from the Iraq war to now the environment.

Think about the implications. The US and the Bush administration continue to ignore pleas from other countries to lead the way on climate change and decreasing emissions yet they don't. They want it to be voluntary because they want to volunteer to do nothing. They are the worst environmental administration ever and they continue to prove their incompetence. The US spews the most into the atmosphere yet is volunteering to do the least.

Conflict will erupt over water shortages, farmland, and societies moving due to inhospitable regions that have all but dried up. Much of what is happening in Darfur is in fact partly related to the fact that the area is under a huge drought.

Gary Denbo, Welcome Aboard!

Well, its not a huge free agent signing by the Blue Jays, but keep an eye on this one as spring training and the season unfolds. I have a hunch this could pay off huge. This guy comes highly touted as a hitting coach.

Gary Denbo was signed as the new hitting coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. He comes over from the Yankees. That is significant in and of itself. If you are going to improve your coaching staff, you might as well pick the brains of a perennial winner.

This move is also significant in that Denbo needs to turn around a line up that was A) devastated by injuries and B) full of potential. I like the fact hes a former Yankee coach and has spent significant time with the Torre regime.

The only thing to do now is wait through the long winter and see what next year brings. Hopefully this will bring huge rewards next October.

Get Ready Vesa or ARGH! Here Come the Sabres!

Well who ever is in goal Monday night for the Leafs, I wish them luck. The Sabres just wiped the ice clean with the Washington Capitals and basically took the Capital's strong start to the season and ended it.

Tonights 7-3 trouncing included 53 shots from Buffalo including 24 in the second period. Im in a bit of a catch 22 here. Vesa is my fantasy goalie, however, from what he has done so far this year, I don't like his chances. If he gets 53 shots on him it will be a long night for the Leafs.

That said, ARGH (Andrew Raycroft's Glove Hand, which is usually more like swiss cheese than a glove) as Freddie P likes to call it hasn't looked spectacular either. I don't think I'm starting Vesa Monday night even if he does get the start. Let's face it, the Leafs haven't exactly been tearing up the league and even though Buffalo lost their first two against the Isles, their offense has looked dangerous in all four of their games.

Could be a fun night Monday, at least on the Buffalo side of the border. I love Sabre/Leaf games so much fun and rivalry between them.

Touch Em All Joe

This time of year also reminds me of this moment. Joe Carter will always be remembered for this home run and bringing back to back championships to the Toronto Blue Jays. I Hate This Time Of Year

Does anyone else hate this time of year? The sun goes down earlier and earlier and you wake up in the dark. I was doing okay until the last couple of days and it has all of a sudden gone from summer to cold and dark. Yuck.

It should be a rule that the sun comes up in the morning at a decent hour so we can all wake up in daylight year round. Im moving to the equator. Padang, Indonesia would be nice. 12 hours of daylight everyday down there no matter what. The sun comes up anywhere from 5:58 in the AM  to 6:30 and sets everyday between 6:00 PM and 6:30.

Sure you don't get the longer daylight at night but the sun is up in the morning and they never get less than 12 hours of light. The average high temperature of 80-87 degrees year round doesn't hurt either. Hmmmm sounds like a plan, now I just have to convince the wife.......Ill be back.

The End of Hard Copies?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071012/ap_en_mu/irrelevant_record_labels

The above article is huge on so many levels. Radiohead was the latest artist to say goodbye to major recording label and give its new material out online as a download allowing the listener to download it for a cost that they saw fit.

Madonna is also eliminating major record labels for her next contract. Prince has done the same and others may be to follow. Could music be headed towards an age where it is all online? I hope not.

Im one who if I like it I want to go to a real record store and purchase a hard copy with all the CD art to go with it. It wouldn't be fun anymore to just go online and download a bunch of songs with nothing tangible to go with them.

Would U2's the Joshua Tree have been the same without the album cover to go with it? Would The Hip's Trouble at the Henhouse be the same without the cover art? What about my favorite album artwork of all time the cover for Rush's Hold Your Fire?

Not to mention all the hidden goodies you can find in album artwork and reading the liner notes. It would be a sad day for a true fan of collecting music if the tangible CD/album artwork disappeared in the years to come with the explosion of online media killing the major label industry but for some reason thats the feeling I get when I read this article. What do you think?

October Surprise Storm

Today is the anniversery of the October Storm of last year. I will remember my 3 hour drive home from work which usually takes 20 minutes. I remember the green and purple lightning, power lines snapping and tree branches falling all around me as I weaved my way home.

I have been around for a lot of storms here in Buffalo but of all the storms this one scared me the most. There was more damage, more dangerous destruction from the storm than in any other we have had here.

These are some videos of that storm:

Too Little Too Late

This cross check to the face by Jesse Boulerice on Ryan Kesler was senseless and I get the suspension. The NHL finally is getting tough on these hits.

However, for me its too little too late. The NHL should have been making this statement years ago. Neil's hit on Drury should have been dealt with more severely along with countless other examples of how this league has not dealt with this issue in the right manner and to do it now is a joke.

That said, its about time. This goon should be out for the rest of his life not just 25 games. Ryan Kesler could easily be sucking his meals through a straw. How do you make up for that if you are Jesse Boulerice? If you have to do that kind of crap to make a living in this league then you need to find another job bagging groceries or working as a stock boy.

Sabres 6 Thrashers 0

Buffalo played 60 minutes tonight and earned their first win. The first two games were flukes. This team is what we saw tonight. I would like to see Ryan Miller get tested a little more just to show hes got it

Overall it was a good win over what should be a good team The Trashers are a good team who was playing their second game in two nights. The Trashers looked horrible for most of this one with only 20 shots on goal.

I think Michael Ryan is the real deal. Hes gritty and can skate and if he plays like this all year, they have 4 real good lines and Andrew Peters is sitting which is fine by me..

Music That Changed My Life- Sting

I have always been a big fan of the Police and Sting. Unfortunately, I got priced out when It came to getting tickets for the reunion.

I can say though that the period that this song came from was the best music that Sting or the Police put out. Dream of the Blue Turtles til Ten Sumner's Tales was awesome, fusing jazz and rock. It was Dream of the Blue Turtles and Nothing Like the Sun and Soul Cages that will be the Sting trilogy that will always stay in my mind as his best material.

It steered me away from a period where i was starting to listen to top 40 and actually brought me back to listening to stuff with substance and got me into CFNY and the alternative movement.

While I did'nt see the Police I did see Sting 3 times. This to me is him at his best.....

Summer Concerts- The Fixx

One of the bands I was most impressed with this summer was the Fixx. They sounded so tight, it literally sounded like they were playing the CD. With some bands this is a bad thing but not with the Fixx. They put on an incredibly good performance. They opened for the Alarm and the Psychadelic Furs. As far as a triple bill goes, any one of them could have played first, second or third. It just so happened the Fixx played first to a small crowd at the Gateway Concert Series in Canal Park in Tonawanda. They made a fan out of me again. This isn't from that show but its a recent Vegas show. Red Skies...Enjoy.

Another project we keep hearing about is the damn Peace Bridge.

The way they have been farting around with this project you would think Bush and Cheney were hear running it like they are running the war.

Again, get the damn thing built. The main obstacle for this is our fearless leaders in this community keep holding meetings after meeting and forum after forum to let residents voice their opinion and the fact is I really think that Buffalo residents are just too stupid to pick a damn bridge.

No wonder we have been in a recession in this area, no one can make up their mind. Again like the Bass Pro thing, just build it. By the time they get done discussing this the Peace Bridge that is there now is going to collapse into the Niagara giving us no choice but to build a new one.

FINALLY!!!!!!

By the time this thing finally gets built we are going to be so sick of hearing about how its done or not done and all the excuses as to why, we are not even going to want to go near the damn place.

That said, FINALLY! Now can we please build the damn thing? The only thing that has lasted longer than this was the damn Hundred Years War between the British and French. Build it so we can see what the damn thing looks like and get rid of that ugly eye sore.

I loved the Aud more than anyone but the with the pussy footing around that our leaders have been doing with this you would have thought that they were knocking down a crystal palace. The Aud was great for hockey but its been sitting there vacant for years and is rat infested and filled with asbestos.

Now that its a done deal again lets break ground tomorrow, no turning back this time and lets get it done before Bass Pro backs out.

Less is More?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071009/ap_on_re_us/massive_marathons

Look, I understand the concern for peoples well being but this article takes it a little too far. The Chicago Marathon was recently marred by the excessive heat sending hundreds sick to hospitals and resulting in one death.

So what. Seriously? Thousands of runners and only one death?

I don't mean to sound cruel or unphased by someone dying, but we are in a country of fat, over weight people and they want to discourage people from participating in physical fitness?

People should be commended for running in a marathon, not told it may be hazardous to your health. The weather in Chicago this time of year should be much cooler. Who knew it was going to be mid July in the early part of October?

Give this marathons are dangerous thing a rest already. The news will latch onto anything to get a headline and they did with this. Its probably on that whining bitch Nancy Grace's show right now. The media makes it sound like marathons will kill you if you are not careful, which may be true if not trained properly. Of all the marathons that go on in the US every year, when was the last person who died as the result of one?

Congradulations Cleveland

Congradulations Cleveland, In light of what the Indians accomplished by eliminating the Yankees, they will get my support throughout the rest of the major league playoffs and world series.

That said, I don't think the Indians can beat the Red Sox. But I hope they do because I hate the Red Sox just a tiny bit less than the Yankees.

Belly Was Underrated

Belly was in my opinion a very underrated group. Star was one my favorite CD's from the early 90s and Tanya Donnelly came from a long line of Alt-rock bands like the Breeders and Throwing Muses. The Breeders were a side project of Kim Deal who was with the Pixies and also had a project called The Amps. So I found this little gem.

Belly's Gepetto. Enjoy

Drinking Age Should Be 18

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071009/lf_afp/lifestyleusyouthalcoholsafetylaw

The above story talks about how MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and the American Medical Association want to keep the drinking age at 21. They say it will curb binge drinking and help save lives. I say that is the biggest farce.

What do all kids do anyway when they hit 21? Go out and binge drink on their 21st birthday. Whats the difference. What happened after 21? The drinking is because you enjoy a beer every once in a while, not because you have to get drunk. Binging slows down soon after 21, why? because its not a challenge anymore. Once you hit 21 you can have it whenever you want.

Kids binge drink because, they don't know when they are going to get it again. They know its illegal, and what do kids like doing more than anything else? Pissing off authority figures like parents and other adults by doing things they shouldn't be doing. So let them drink earlier, they get the binging out of their system and then its over before 21.

Take this away from them by lowering the drinking age to 18 throughout the United States and you get rid of the problem. The ones with the real problems are alcoholics, Its hereditary and if they are going to be alcoholics its going to happen regardless of the drinking age.

Whats the big deal anyway. Kids are wise enough to vote at 18 (We all know after choosing Bush we all wanted to start drinking heavily), they can go and serve in the military and die for their country at 18. Im in favor of allowing them a beer at 18. Seems to me that choosing to die for a needless war is a tougher choice than choosing to drink at 18.

Goodbye Yankees

Its not over yet but I would like to bid a fond farewell to the Yankees now. I would like to say goodbye to Joe Torre, he will hopefully not be back next year

I would like to say goodbye to Jorge Posada, hopefully the Jays will make a bid for him in free agency.

I would like to say goodbye to A-Rod, hopefully hell sign with the Cubs so the Jays don't have to see him between April and September next year.

I would like to say goodbye to Jason Giambi, he will also most likely not be back.

I Would also like to say goodbye to Mariano Rivera. Rumors are that he will not be back.

I would like to also say goodbye to Bobby Abreu. His contract I believe is up after this year.

There is going to be some big changes to the Evil Empire after the Indians finish them off. Hopefully the Jays can capitalize on this in the offseason and trump the Yanks in free agency and gain some more ground

It would be sweet to see Jorge in Toronto for a nice 3 year deal. He could teach our young staff a ton.

Week One Fantasy Hockey Update

Well, as I mentioned things were ugly in week one. The goaltending was subpar, the offense struggled and the defencemen didn't chip in much either. I went 2-9 in week one. If there is a glimmer of hope, I play the second last team in my league tonight who is actually my brother in law. His team is 3-8.

I made one trade:

Patrick Kane and Brian Campbell for Mike Comrie and Jason Pomenville, hopefully that will boost the offense.

I also have another trade waiting for the other owner to take a glimpse and decline or not...what would you do if offered this

Im offering

Eric Staal                                  FOR                           Patrice Bergeron

Ales Kotalik                                                                 Jaroslov Spacek

Vesa Toskala                                                               Mikka Kipprusoff

I think its a good deal maybe im wrong. This is also a team that also has Rick Dipietro and Manny Fernandez in goal. So with Toskala he wont be suffering too much.

In a twelve team league that plays two goalies on any given night...thats pretty good threesome

The move would give me Lundquist and and Kipprusoff. and Marc DenisI would consider Staal a big upgrade for him at Center and Kotalik is a 30-40 goal scorer waiting to happen for Spacek who is an over rated yet steady defenceman.

So the question is, do you take Staal for Kipprusoff?

Remember These Guys?

Shanana used to be my favorite show on TV when I was little. I remember Bowzer and always wanting to be like him. I also used to think the guy playing piano was actually playing on his sleeve....of course thats not true but I couldn't believe he could play that good on his arm.

These Guys Scare the Crap Out of Me!!!

From Gulliani on down this group of politicians scares the crap out of me. The 2008 GOP Candidates are awful. They have nothing else in mind but continuing the same old crap we have gotten out of the Bush administration.

They may paint it a different color, they may even spray it with a little cologne, but over all it will be the same old stinking pile of crap. Romney is proving himself to be totally clueless especially when it comes to health care. Gulliani knows nothing other than 9/11 this and 9/11 that....okay he can call his wife and tell her he loves her, what until the 5th marriage?

The whole field is clueless on the environment which it is probably too late for anyway. Peak oil is coming or may have already come and gone the Bush Administration has failed in its energy policy and none of these brick for brains is going to develop anything better

Im not saying the Democrats are much better but they do have Ideas at least and are talking about real issues. This group is too stupid to talk issues so they avoid them by talking about 9/11 and calling their wives and telling them how much they love them. If anyone in this group gets the next presidency I may be looking into how to become a Canadian.

First Trade of Fantasy Hockey

I may be a bit insane and may have overpaid but I traded Patrick Kane who though he is a touted rookie is just 18 and probably not going to make a huge splash and Brian Campbell for Mike Comrie and Jason Pominville

I needed scoring and both these guys can provide it. I based it on the play of Comrie against Buffalo this weekend and it looked promising, also Pomnville looked like a man possessed on the line with Tim Connelly so he should be a good offensive addition.

There are defencemen available to replace Brian Campbell. I have one in Wade Redden and another who is decent in Tom Poti so Im not worried about my defence.

So far after week one, things are not looking too good. Ill give an update after the finals are in tomorrow.

Christian Conservatives

On Sunday mornings I spend time flipping back and forth between Tim Russert and Chris Wallace on Fox News. I am a Democrat so everything I hear on Fox News I take with a grain of salt. However, its worth listening to. I do tend to spend more time with Russert.

That Said, I am so sick of hearing the term Christian Conservative. First of all, Christianity is a religious reference being included with a political one. Get rid of the Christian part and Im fine. Christian Conservative is such a narrow term. You can't be Jewish and be conservative? What about Muslim Conservatives? Protestant Conservatives? OR Atheist Conservatives?

Secondly, there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. If religion is going to have such a powerful influence over our politics in this country I am a huge fan of making churches pay taxes. They influenced our last two elections and look at who we got stuck with. A big idiot.

Speaking of idiots, the same people calling themselves Christian Conservatives have also been hard at work dumbing this country down with creationism and all this crap about having kids learn about it in science classrooms. Creationism does not belong in science classrooms. That is all there is to it. There is nothing scientific about it.

On the money thing, have you seen the huge things that look more like office buildings than places of worship? They are huge and they scream money when you see them. They are run like a business and they look like one whose only purpose is to draw people in and get them to give money to an invisible all knowing thing, only to use the money to pay their preachers and accountants and feed their spin machine, and convince people that Dinosaurs walked with man in Creationists Museums.

Enough already with this Christian Conservative term. Every time someone says it Im going to either change the station or completely ignore them.

Another Potential Casualty of Global Warming

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071006/ap_on_sc/sea_ice_walrus

Melting sea ice have displaced thousands of walrus in Alaska. This is more bad news for the fragile ecosystems of the north. It is very disheartening to see yet another species struggling. The food chain is fragile. If one piece breaks down, it all fails, especially in the Arctic

We have heard this alot this summer. Sea ice in the Arctic has shrunk to record lows. This represents the air conditioner of the Earth. The less Ice the less cooling. It will be interesting to see what this winter brings.

What people seem to ignore is that global warming is not a day to day thing but a long term thing. Seasonal climate could be an indicator but not day to day. This heat we have had recently here in this region while not unheard of has been more and more frequent in the late summer and early autumn. We have had readings close to 90 this summer from May through now early to mid October here in WNY.

That said, this is not a regional thing either. Globally, things are heaing up. While things may eventually cool off and get back closer to normal it is important to remember the global and long term nature of this problem.

With less sea ice it will be interesting to see if it has an effect on whether or not we get the truly arctic air masses during the winter this year and in years to come.

Sleeman's Honey Brown

I am here having what I consider Canada's greatest beer. Maybe the greatest beer period. Sleeman's Honey Brown. Actually any of the Sleeman's beers are great to me. I like Molson Canadian but Sleeman's is a real treat. I try to make my way up to Duty Free or the beer store once every month or two to get me a few 12's of this sweet nectar.

I wish that someone this side of the border would get smart and start carrying this beer. It was trialed at a few of our grocery stores but didn't stick. I really like the Pale Ale as well.

No Win On Opening Night

Well, it wasn't the outcome we all wanted but at least we know they won't be perfect early on this year. Remember last years streak of 11 wins in a row to start a season? The Islanders assured us that it will not be a repeat of last years early season run with a 6-4 win.

Maybe they can go 11-1 to start the season. Last night was typical of early season hockey, sloppy play in both ends and lots of goals. Ryan Miller did look sharp in spurts, The goals he let in were more a function of sloppy play in front that left him out to dry.

The offense scored 4 but how many of those were because the Islander's defense is awful. The powerplay also started where it left off in the playoffs. 0 for the season so far. Any bets on when the first powerplay goal will be scored?

No Torture? Really?

"When we find somebody who may have information regarding a potential attack on America, you bet we're going to detain them and you bet we're going to question them, because the American people expect us to find out information, actionable intelligence, so we can help them -- help protect them," Bush said.

Bush said his administration sticks to "U.S. law and our international obligations."

He said, "The techniques that we use have been fully disclosed to appropriate members of the United States Congress."

These were the comments made by George W. Where was he to comment on this like 3 years ago when this was an issue? Why couldn't he defend the allegations then? We all know the above statements are lies and if this president ever is impeached, which I highly doubt will happen, the torture issues should be brought up

I really think this guy is either A) slow or B) a genius. Slow in that some would say geez hes finally catching on. Genius in that by him making these statesments, it gets people talking about things other than the issues related to the upcoming 2008 elections.

The Republican party in this country is doing it all the time to distract voters from real issues like getting out of Iraq, healthcare, the environment, education and social security.

Pay attention to this stuff, just when mainstream media stops talking about these ridiculous statements (because they are so late and such lies) there will be another set of statements that will get the media talking about something else completely unrelated to what we should be talking about or there will be another Republican sex scandal or something completely unrelated to current issues that are going get voted on in 2008.

The man is a genius, the party is genius...there I said it. If the democrats are smart, they stick with real issues that matter to this country instead of focusing on things that Bush or his media outlets Rush/Fox News says. They could spend years focusing on the stupid things that come out of them. Let Bush be a lame duck president and let Limbaugh talk to no one important and stick with issues.

The Curse of the A-Rod?

How sweet it is. Two down, one to go for the Indians. They were helped by swarms of bugs. I my gut is telling me that since the Yankees became the greediest team in baseball by aquiring A-Rod, they may have lifted the curse of the bambino and begun the curse of the A-Rod. Think about it, how much has really gone right for them since getting A-Rod?

Not a whole lot. Up 3-0 in the ALCS vs.Boston and gets swept in four straight to choke up the 2004 ALCS. Detroit eliminates them last year and this year the bugs come out and are more than likely going to cost them getting out of the division round.

The only thing better than the Yankees stinking in the playoffs is having the Jays in the playoffs. Since that is not possible, sit back and enjoy the Indians upset over the evil empire and the Curse of the A-Rod.

Blue Jays 2008 Home Schedule

Maybe I'm jumping the gun on this but did anyone notice the 2008 Blue Jays tentative home schedule next year?

Why only 6 home games against the Yankees and 9 against Boston? Shouldn't it be 9 home games against all teams in their division? They got hosed this year in that there was not a home weekend series against either Boston or New York which on a weekend is a big attendance draw.

Hopefully for them and the fans this gets fixed because I truly believe that next year those Yankee and Redsox games will have meaning and not just for the Yankees and Red Sox but for the Jays as well. Hopefully there will be three more home Yankee games in there so we can watch them kick Yankee ass three more times.

How sweet hockey season will be with those two in the broadcast booth and how quickly we forget Jim Lorentz when Harry Neale fills his shoes. I promise that I won't forget Jim but the Sabres did cheer us up with the signing of Harry Neale.

Illegal Downloading

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071004/ap_on_hi_te/downloading_music

"DULUTH, Minn. - The recording industry won a key fight Thursday against illegal music downloading when a federal jury found a Minnesota woman shared copyrighted music online and levied $222,000 in damages against her."

"The jury ordered Jammie Thomas, 30, to pay the six record companies that sued her $9,250 for each of 24 songs they focused on in the case. They had alleged she shared 1,702 songs online in violation of their copyrights"

Are you kidding me? I understand that the record companies want this to stop but really? Did they ever think that allowing programs like Limewire and other programs might actually give their artists exposure they might not otherwise get? With all the crap that comes out now a days you have to sift through it all to get to the good stuff that is actually worth getting in your car and driving to a record store to buy or putting your credit information in with ITunes to buy from them.

Not to mention that there is so much bootlegged stuff now that bands like the Tragically Hip, The Cure and others just to name a few actually support and encourage their fans to do. The Cure's last DVD released last year was from fans who shot footage. The only place you can get some of the live bootlegged stuff is by downloading through such pirates as Limewire.

Im sorry but this lawsuit brought against this poor woman is way out of proportion and if she got hit for that much then I better throw away my computer right now and plead the 5th because I have probably downloaded well over 3000 songs. News like this won't stop me either. I look for stuff I can't get in record stores or on ITunes. The Tragically Hip have a series of live recordings out only available through ITunes Canada. Well I can't get it here in the States so you bet Im going through Limewire and other sources to download as much of their live stuff as I can.

The thing is when I download something and I like it enough, Im a big enough music fan to go out and buy it. But you can only buy what is available to buy. Also, I want to know if the song Im listening to is the only decent thing on the CD im about to go spent $12-$15 or more on.

Realistically how do they expect this poor woman to pay this? They lost a buyer of CDs when they did this to her because every dime she makes is going to have to go to this lawsuit. Furthermore, if she went out and bought all these songs....it would have only cost a fraction of the damages they brought forth against her. I suppose thats the point they are trying to make, buy it or suffer the consequences.

IF they are going to do it to her, better start doing this to everyother music fan not just in the US and Canada but all over the world. She should appeal this case because there are lots of others who are getting away with it.

Help From Mom

Thinking about what to write about today I got some help from my mother, Thanks Mom. She sent me the following piece about how far we have come in 100 years. 1907 was like this:

?? THE YEAR 1907??

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1907.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some  statistics for the Year
 1907 :
************************************

The average life expectancy
was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the home s had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars
and only 144 miles
Of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the
Eiffel Tower !

The average wage in 1907
 was 22 cents per hour.

The average
worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births
took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all  doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
Were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost
four cents a pound.

Eggs were
fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was
fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair
once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada
passed a law that prohibited poor people from
Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death
were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis

3..
Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada
, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea

Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10  adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect  guardian of health."
( Shocking? DUH! )

Eighteen percent of households   had at least

One full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A.

Rush Sucks

This guy literally makes me want to vomit. I listen to him and I want to literally vomit. The guy simply talks just to listen to himself talk. His comment the other day about phony soldiers has done its job. To distract our political leaders and media in the country from real issues. Its got Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid chasing after his comments like a chicken with his head cut off.

I'm not saying that they shouldnt be attacking Limbaugh, but if they are going to attack him over political policies that mean something to the Democratic voting base, not on some shitty comments the guy made. If they start that kind of thing with Limbaugh I guarantee you'll hear some crap out of him everyday.

I listen to him sometimes just to hear what nonsense the jackass is talking about and it takes me about 5 minutes before I'm asking myself if he even lives in the US, if hes not drugged up or something.

The guy is the asshole of this country and deserves to have Democrats clawing at him but the liberals here in the states need to get him talking issues like healthcare, the environment and energy policies. The guy has nothing on these subject because quite frankly his whole party is clueless.

Harry Neale Joining RJ

Sorry Leaf fans, we stole maybe the only color analyst who could match Jim Lorentz. Harry Neale will be joining RJ for Sabres broadcasts. Talk about a great thing. Makes me wonder if this is going to be RJ's last year? Neither one are spring chickens. Neale is from Buffalo so the move makes sense in that regard. Should be a cool season with Neal either way.
