Top Drummers

| | Comments (2)

Im watching VH1 Classics Top Rock Drummers countdown and number 6 was....Phil Collins? Id have trouble with him making my top 50. Ginger Baker was number 5, I still disagree. I would put either one of them close to my top 10. So that got me thinking my top drummers:

1. Jon Bonham- If you havent seen the Led Zepplin DVD go out and buy it and tell me he doesn't have the quickest hands of any drummer you have ever seen.

2. Keith Moon- My friend Rich would know how hard it was for me to rank Moon ahead of my number three but because Moon was such a huge influence I had to rank him higher.

3. Neil Peart- The fact that him and Rush are still going full speed ahead almost 35 years later is incredible especially with all Neil has been through personally. I would have ranked him one but I had to keep bias out of it.

4. Stewart Copeland - He was amazing and a big part of the Police's sound especially on the early records like Outlandous and Regatta De Blanc. Ghost In the Machine was absolute Stewart Copeland art.

5. Jimmy Chamberlin- Smashing Pumpkins. It may have been the melodic sound of James Iha Guitars with Billy Corgans vocals that drew mainstream listeners to them but for me it was all about the pounding of the drums by Jimmy Chamberlin. Siamese Dream and Gish are two of the best examples of his work ever.

6. Dennis Wilson- One of the greats. He made so much of what Brian Wilson wrote come to life. Pet Sounds would have been impossible without Dennis Wilson.

7. Ringo Star- He was a big part of that Beatles Sound.

8. Dave Grohl- Drummer for Nirvana enough said.

9. Matt Cameron- Pearl Jam and Soundgarden Drummer especially impressive on a lot of Soundgardens Early stuff.

10. Bill Berry- Drummer for REM who left way too early no surprise REM has leveled off since his departure from the band.

I went to see the Police last week at the Air Canada Centre, and Stewart Copeland is still as amazing as ever.

Hey Mike,

You have some pretty decent variations on the vh1 list. I think Neil Peart may actually be catorgized with Jimi Hendrix the Sex Pistols and Wayne Gretzky. Why? Coming from 27 years of drumming no one has inspired more nondrummers to buy a pair of sticks and make existing drummers attempt to take it to the next level. Just Hendrix made us believe we just need a stratocaster to play great, the Sex Pistols - all we need is an attitude, and Wayne Gretzky, a hockey stick and an Oilers jersey.

Cheers
