Take away the pity point and the OTL column and there are only 5 teams in the Eastern Conference with true over .500 records. They are: Ottawa, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston and Buffalo.

In the West there are 7 teams: Detroit, St, Louis, Minnesota, Vancouver, Colorado, Dallas and San Jose.

Its ashame. The pity point makes mediocre teams look so much better than they really are. Atlanta and Buffalo are two examples in the East where if you take it away, they gain at least a point on everyone and makes their records look all the more impressive.

Phoenix's 15-16 record looks all the more impressive as they are sitting with no overtime losses. They would gain at least a point over everyone in their conference. I can't get over what a silly concept this thing is. I know I've posted on it before but realistically a teams that are technically better in terms of winning percentage actually lose out on the playoffs because another team lost in overtime more often than they did. Go figure.
