Groups in Alaska are suing to have the yellow billed loon protected. They are stating that industrialization is threatening the loon's habitat.

Its amazing that a symbol of a countries heritage can be allowed to be forced to the brink of endangerment. Loon's regardless of the specific species of Loons are a symbol of Canadian heritage. Its on the one dollar coin thus the term "loonie".

Its not the first time a national symbol has been endangered. The symbol of the United States, the Bald Eagle has been endangered in the past until its recent comeback. Its endangered status was due to man-made pollutants and chemicals such as the pesticide DDT back in the 1970's that caused the thining of the eagles egg shells.

Point is, there are so many who doubt the impact that we have on our environment and our impact on nature, but the fact is that our actions and the way we pollute by our choice of fuels or the way we litter our environment with toxic chemicals and use of land, affects other species and their habitat.

Its ashame that our actions have caused two of North Americas most treasured birds to be endangered at one point or another.
