Jays Add Depth and an Old Friend

| | Comments (0)

The Jays made another free agent move yesterday by bringing back an old, familiar face. Maybe the last real lead off hitter the Jays have had comes back to Toronto.

Shannon Stewart will either be invaluable depth in left field or if Reed Johnson/Matt Stairs runs into trouble, Stewart will become an everyday player/platoon man in ;left field.

He may be 34 and have a lot of miles on him, but hes still speedy, can still hit and should provide the Jays with a legitimate bat to come off the bench and play some outfield, full time if needed.

What this really does is provide the Jays depth if not more than, at least equal to what the Red Sox and Yankees have on their respective benches. Stewart is a veteran who hit .290 last year. He has always hit for average and if needed could hit lead off and steal bases. He also has some pop in his swing too and can hit a few homers and drive the ball into the gaps.

I have a feeling that when the season is over, Stewart may get to know left field in Rogers Center very well again. Nice to have ya back Shannon!
