First To Double Digits

Matt Stairs

I heard this stat during last nights game and had to do a double take. Matt Stairs hit a home run to help the Jays win again and fourth in a row against the Seattle Mariners. What made that home run unique? It was his 10th. He, 39 year old Matt Stairs on a team with Alex Rios, Scott Rolen, Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay leads the team and on July 25th was the first to 10 home runs.

That stat, tells me three things:

1. The Blue Jays offense is that bad

2. Their pitching staff and bullpen has been that good.

3. They can only get better.

With an offense like this, they have no right being 8 1/2 games out of first place in the American League East. However, they have done it with pitching and defense. They now sit one game over .500 and with two more against Seattle, the worst team in the league by far and then a three game set against Tampa, they are poised to make up some ground.

It has to be some sort of record though for the slowest team to have a player reach double digits in home runs. Anyone want to look that one up and get back to me on that let me know.
