Giving You More Than Just My Two Cents
30 Years Since Love Canal
During the late 1970's Niagara Falls, NY was a battleground for residents of the Love Canal. I wasn't even 5 when it all started and by the time it finished, I was 7 years old. I still remember the tension of our friends, neighbors and the community as the event unfolded. My mom was very active in it with the Love Canal Homeowners Association. The link above is from WIVB Channel 4 which features some videos of the past and present. Check out Neighborhood of Fear, it really provides the most comprehensive look at the whole situation. Yesterday, was the 30th Anniversary. About half way through you'll see Grace McCoulf, my mom sounding off on officials. At the time they were moving all children under two and pregnant women. My sister Kelly was just over two making her ineligible. The questions were about how they could discriminate between a 2 year old child and three year old.
Love Canal really kicked the environmental movement into high gear, making polluters responsible for cleaning up land that they contaminate. The result was the Superfund Bill which, funding has been reduced to since the Bush Administration took office in 2000.
Here is another video from Youtube that is worth a look too:
