Remembering My Grandmother
My grandmother died three years ago today. This past winter something little but important reminded me of her. It was the coldest snap of the year and I needed a good winter hat.
I went to Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Walmart, Dicks Sporting Goods, you name the store and nothing. They were all chincy little hats that cost $12-$20 and nothing I'd be willing to put on my head. It was actually quite comical as I played it out in my head on my journey to every respectable store on Niagara Falls Blvd.
You remember people for the little things. My grandmother was one of the greatest people you could meet, she did things she liked to do right until the very end and one of those things was knitting.
Without her, my sisters and I would have never had anything to wear on our heads. It was just one of the things she did so well that she was known for throughout our small community of friends and family on Grand Island.
And believe me, those hats were priceless compared to the store bought ones. The difference? The love she put into them.
And with the holidays fast approaching, the stockings are missed too. I could go on and on.
She was special in other ways too, but like the hat search, its the little things you think of, especially on anniversaries like today.
Another one of those things is the Yankees not being in the playoffs. As much as I dislike the New York Yankees and hate it when they win, when they lose and are not in the post season I know how much Mary would have enjoyed it. She was a Yankee fan through and through. Since it doesn't make a bit of difference, I hope the Yankees win their last two games of this season. They will finish ahead of the Jays anyway.
She would have appreciated this little Youtube video as much for the tune as for the fact that I put it on my website (sorry Jays fans) today is a Yankee day:

Thank you for sharing about your grandmother. It has been year last June (week before Father's Day) that my Papa passed away at the age of 89. I love hearing people's personal funny stores of their grandparents.
My papa was a diabetic for as long as I was alive, but holidays he got to splurge. One year, no one brought potato chips for the Christmas spread, and he loved the ruffled ones. We are busy enough as it is getting dinner ready for 35+ people, so we call everyone who isn't there yet to see if A) They could stop (out in the country, nothing was open!) to get some or B)If they had any chips at home. Miraculously, my cousin had a half eaten bag, brought it and he never knew the difference. :)
Mike this was nice what you wrote about Gran. We all miss her.
Very nice Mike. I have a stocking for each of my kids that your gram knitted. They are a little streched, because she told me to stuff them... and bring lots of smiles on Christmas.
Mikey Pat very nice your Gram was a great lady. I still have the stockings she knitted for Mike & Matt and use them for
Christmas every year- Aunt Glor
