Why are Gas Prices Rising?

Gas is going up despite oil going down. Please explain that one to me. By my estimates, gas should be around $3.40-3.60 a gallon at the $92 per barrel of oil range so what gives?
Everyone is blaming the spike in gas on Ike but shouldn't oil be the first to go up? Instead its going on a nose dive and gas seems to be ignoring that.
I think its all out gouging and its pathetic. Its an excuse by the oil companies to keep gas prices artificially high. And what can we do about it? Sit here and take it up our tail pipes. We are powerless. The only power we have is to not drive or use any fossil fuels.....good luck.

Unfortunately Mike, it's the Golden Rule... Those who have the gold make the rules. When oil was first spiking toward 100/bb back in late Dec/early Jan consumers were paying 2.75-3.00/g depensing where you lived. Now oil hovers mid-90s and most gas stations here in Buffalo are in the 3.85/g range.
Gas prices went up a little due to hurricane because they are worried about refineries, the structures that actually turn oil into gas. But here's the deal... the hurricane MISSED! We are seeing an all-out gouge, just a complete rape of the consumer right now. Gas distributors and stations excuses? Well right now they are selling gas they purchased back when oil was $140. So here's a question... then when oil was spiking why were they raising gas prices when they were still selling the gas they bought when oil was at $80 ?!?!?
It's a complete sham, and I want to know why aren't we hearing more about this? Why isn't there more outrage other than an occasional blog or a letter to the editor? Look at the charts people... we should be paying 2.90/g right now. Everyday Americans are faced with the decision of whether to drive out of town on the weekend or not because a tank of gas is $60, yet billionaire corporations like Exxon on Chevron will make billions more this quarter and next quarter, etc. until someone takes them to task. Where's the SEC and Senate Oversight committees when you need them? Oh, they're in the pocket of the oil companies.
No kidding. Florida had gas prices up around $5 in some places. For what? All we hear about is how Gas is tied to the price of oil, Oil goes up gas goes up, oil goes down gas should plummet with it. You saw the same station I did today on the corner of Broadway and Transit in Depew, $3.98 at Mobil. That is closer to the price of gas when oil was approaching $120 a barrel.
I felt like stopping there and filling up only to bitch out the owner. But the problem is, no one will because if you refuse to pay the exorbitant prices, you get arrest for pumping and running. There is no one checking the prices, its all lip service. its all bullshit.
