October Surprise 2 Years Ago

| | Comments (2)

Its been two years now since the October Surprise snow storm. I remember my drive home that day. A drive that normally takes 15 minutes took 3 hours. I quickly cancelled my homecare visit as tree branches were collapsing on either side of my car as I was driving down streets in Amherst attempting to get to my visit.

This video that someone shot, accurately portrays the carnage of that night. I got home to a sparking electrical wire in our backyard. Half our street went without power, we were on the half with power. The only thing we lost was TV, the satellite went out for a few hours.

I went out to try to brush it off when I noticed the sparking wire overhead so I figured a night without TV would be nothing compared to getting electrocuted.

It will be a storm that will be remembered for a long time to come, no it wasn't the windiest, no it wasn't the snowiest, no it wasn't the longest lasting, but it was the earliest, catching all of us by surprise:

Yeah, a storm most won't forget. I remember I left work and we were shocked that there was an inch of snow already. Then as the night went on it never stopped. My power went out at about midnight and I could hear the trees snapping all night. I woke up the next morning to 2ft of snow I live in a 2-flat and my neighbor left his shovels at his parents, so we only had mine. He had been up helping clear trees and then shoveled our whole driveway by himself. We heard it was going to be awhile to get power back (ended up being 5 days), so I left Friday at about 3pm and headed down Transit and the Thruway was open by the time I got to Milestrip and headed to my parents. It looked like a war zone.. then I got to Hamburg/Eden and there was zero snow. I teach, so we had the whole week off, but lost our entire Feb. break....

I was working for Summit Educational Resources at the time and they were dedicating their new playground that day too. The morning was kind of strange, brisk, cold, the sun was out but there was a stiff breeze and then the wall of clouds formed it was definitely intense.
