Giving You More Than Just My Two Cents
Ridiculous Contracts
The New York Yankees and New York Mets continue to prove why Major League Baseball needs a hard salary cap. Its gone beyond reasonable, its fucking insane. The Yankees officially made the same mistake they did with A-Rod by signing CC Sabathia to a contract that he will never earn or live up to. The Mets followed suit and went out and replaced the former best closer in the game with not one of the best but two of the best closers to replace him in JJ Putz and K Rod. Why do you need two closers?
I have almost run out of the energy to comment on this kind of ludicrous spending in Major League Baseball anymore. It has gotten to the point where you can't expect a team other than the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox to acquire the best players in free agency anymore. Beyond those two teams, there are few others who are willing to spend the money because they just don't have it.
CC Sabathia is going to end up a huge mistake by the time his contract is over. I heard rumors that he didn't even want to sign in NY but the players union inisisted he did because of the fact that the market was looking weak and they wanted to drive the rest of this years market. Gee, in anyother atmosphere, that is colusion is it not? The players union is greedy and the owners of those above mentioned teams are even greedier. Nothing would make me happier than to see CC Sabathia throw out his elbow on the first pitch of the first spring training game he appears in. When will the Yankees learn? Signing players to ridiculous contracts does nothing but hurt the rest of the league. The league is worse off for it.
Omar Minaya the Met's GM made the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen saying that there is plenty of financial parity in baseball and that there must be 10 teams with payrolls over $100 million dollars. Yeah and there are two with payrolls over $200 million. That leaves over half the league that can't even touch $100 million. You have teams out there that have trouble making $50 million payrolls. There is not parity, he's full of crap. So, the Yankees must be done right? Nope, they are going after AJ Burnett with a five year deal now worth around $80 million. AJ Burnett wasn't worth his last contract with the Blue Jays. The Yankees would pay him about $16 million a year for five year. Prepare for five injury filled seasons. He had one good year with the Jays and that was a contract year. He had one good year with the Florida Marlins, that was a contract year. That is a warning sign and that my friends is why there is no parity. When teams like the Yankees and Mets can afford to make $80 million dollar mistakes with average players, there is no parity. The next industry looking for a bailout will be The New York Yankees.
