Jays Get Encarnacion

Edwin

No it wasn't the big Halladay trade, but it was big none the less. The Blue Jays traded away Scott Rolen for Edwin Encarnacion and two minor league pitchers.

I liked Scott Rolen but lets face it, since his arrival in Toronto we all expected more. Yes his defense was stellar, it will always be, but his bat failed him. He figured it out during a short stint on the DL last year when he adjusted his swing to help his ailing shoulders, but even then he has not been the same Rolen that hit for power in St. Louis. He has become a guy who could hit for high average and not much pop.

So for $11 million a year the Jays could afford to let him go.

In return they get Edwin Encarnacion, one look at this years numbers and you scratch your head, but lets look at the over all player....He is a 6'2 231 3rd baseman who is just 26 years old. So in the trade, the Jays get younger and much more upside at third base, something I have though they needed going back to Troy Glaus.

Encarnacion had 26 home runs last year and 68 RBIs in 146 games so this guy has some pop, he just needs a team that will help him develop some consistency....in comes Cito Gaston. Cito is known for taking reclamation projects going back to his last time around in Toronto. Dave Winfield was one, everyone thought Winfield was done but he signed a one year deal with the Jays and sparked a few more years out of his 40+ year old body.

Encarnacion is no where near 40, so he should be a very solid addition who the Jays can reasonably afford to make an extension to after his contract is up after next year.

The Jays also get two young pitchers, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart. Roenicke is projected as a future closer, he is 6'3" 194 right hander and should provide some help for a tired bullpen.

Zach Stewart is a promising, young starter who has gone from A ball to AAA just this year.

Say what you want about Riccardi but he got this deal right. He stole this deal especially when you consider Rolen's age and the fact that he is not the hitter he used to be. The Jays get lots of upside and some legitimate help for the bullpen. The value of this trade may not be realized until next year but we will see flashes of it before this year is up. If Gaston and the coaches can get Encarnacion fixed, this trade is a steal and the Jays have themselves a solid third baseman for 5-8 years.

Shatner Makes Sense of Palin Tweets

This is awesome, you have to go half way through to get to the Shatner clip but really is anyone sad to see Palin go? If she had become Vice PResident she would have surpassed Dan Quayle as the all time dumbest of the dumb Vice Presidents.

Only Conan and Shatner have the mindset to make sense of her senseless tweets:

I will give her this, she gave us something to laugh about, can't wait to read the book, but anyone who expects her to be the only author is kidding themselves she is going to have to have it co-authored, she may write the first draft, but she will need someone else to revise and rewrite her senseless musings.

My New Show: Hung

I have not gotten into a lot of the HBO series as much as others, maybe I don't have time to watch all that TV, maybe nothing really caught my eye, this show though for some reason caught my eye and though its in its first season and still airing pilot episodes it shows some promise.

It stars Thomas Jane who plays the leading role of Ray Drecker, Jane Adams (Tanya), Anne Heche (Ray's ex wife Jessica), Charlie Saxton (Damon, Ray's son), Siaona Smit-Mcphee (Darby, Ray's daughter) and Eddie Jemison (Jessica's husband who is of Ocean's movies with Clooney and the gang).

To sum it up, Ray is down on his luck and figures that the only "talent" he has left is that he is ....well hung.....

Check out the trailer, its on Sunday nights at 10:

Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince

Harry-Potter-and-the-Half-Blood-Prince

By far and away the most powerful and emotional of the Harry Potter movies thus far. It spends a lot of time on the past in this movie. Memories of Tom Riddle/Slughorn and playing to the past that surrounds Voldemort.

Dumbledore and Harry are the two big characters in this movie and we see more of Dumbledore than perhaps any of the previous 5 films.

Its also a very somber ending and where as most Harry Potter movies you leave with a good feeling , this one ends on a low note leaving you thirsting for whats to come. Next year we will see that wait end hopfully.

Overall I give it a 9/10, absolutely outstanding, a little emotional and a little more teen themed for the real little ones which is to be expected and if you read the later books makes sense. Its definitely a darker and moodier film.

Sunday Retro

After a week or so off from Sunday Retro and seeing very little in the way of summer like weather (hot, steamy, humid and most importantly....DRY) I am going to give a few weeks to songs that refer to Summer.

This week its a Simple Minds classic where they are searching for Someone, Somewhere in the Summertime. I thought it somewhat appropriate since here we all are searching somewhere for the summer of '09. They say we spend our summers preparing for the coming winter, well I ain't ready yet.

It seems we are always in a rush once Labor Day hits we are in a rush to end summer and get on with fall. This year...summer goes till Sept 21 and will not end in my book a day sooner.

Obama Was Dead On

police

Barack Obama in Wednesday nights press conference was absolutely right with his comments over the Henry Gates arrest in Cambridge. It wasn't controversial it was the truth, if you listened to his comments about it he clearly said:

"...acted stupidly" . He never called the police stupid, he referred to their actions as stupid, big difference.

The fact is they arrested a Havard professor who was in his own home and presented ID to prove that he was in his own home yet the Police were somehow blind to that fact and gave him a hard time and arrested him anyway.

The officer in charge says he owes the guy no apoloty, I disagree, they do owe the guy an apology, if the police come to your house and arrest you for breaking into your own home your going to demand an apology for it and Sgt Crowley should apologize for it.

My only question is why didn't the neighbor who called this in recognize Mr. Gates breaking into his own home? Most neighbors would offer a helping hand or have an extra key for you.

5440 At Artpark

Tuesday night I braved the rainy weather and headed to Artpark to catch one of my favorite bands of all time. To see the third best musician named Neil in the world (at least in my mind), Neil Osborne perform with his bandmates 5440. The top three Neils of course are 1. Neil Young, 2. Neil Peart, 3. Neil Osborne.

The rain had ended just in time for the show to start and we got what you always get from 5440, a solid hour and a half of 5440 tunes.

The opened with Nice to Love You and didn't stop until a meet and greet with all four band members in the merchandise area. All four stayed to sign at least for a hundred or so fans after the show.

There was a pleasant addition to the line up as well, Tom Hooper, founding member of the Grapes of Wrath was on stage playing keyboards and other various intsruments as well as supplying backing vocals and some great vocals on a few accoustic tunes including a Bob Dylan cover of Walking Down The Line.

This is a little Grapes of Wrath clip of "You May Be Right":

A Proposal From Physicians

This is an 8 page proposal written by doctors featuring 55 references throughout the proposal, supporting nationalized health insurance.

Its very thorough in what it would entail and is specific to how it is paid for and the extent of coverage. No one is left out. The savings that they state are real savings that would more than pay for the program.

Take the time and read this:

Lobbyists Need to Go

Check out who the top three lawmakers are when it comes to lobbyist money from the healthcare industry. This is shameful, the only reason why healthcare is a big pain in the ass to reform is because the insurance companies and drug companies are spending ridiculous money to keep the status quo because they know if this gets passed with a public option they are going to have trouble competing.

Maybe if they stopped lobbying lawmakers and stopped spending money on politicians our premiums whould go down.

Ed Schultz Our voice for Healthcare Reform

If you have been reading this blog for the last 3-4 months I have been posting a lot of Ed Schultz clips and for good reason. This guy is the voice for the majority of Americans and especially on healthcare.

Its getting to the point where its time for Barack Obama and the democrats to say to hell with the republicans and get this healthcare reform done their way.

Americans want everyone covered, no pre-existing conditions and affordable. Conservatives think our system is perfect, its not, if it was perfect it would cover EVERYONE. It currently leaves out 50 million people. That is not perfect by any means. We are 50th in infant mortality and we pay twice as much per capita than any other country. We need reform and reform at the very least has to come with the public option.

Who cares if the private insurance companies can't compete, who cares if Independent Health, Community Blue and Univera go out of business, the fact is they rip people off and screw them on their healthcare and have been doing so for years.

Heres big Eddie on tonights Ed Show and MSNBC, the difference between him and the repuke talk show hosts is that Ed Schultz fights for average Americans.

From the Land of the Totally Unbelievable

vick

I don't know why this still surprises me but I guess one day I will expect professional sports to have a shred of moral fiber. Instead I turned on ESPN radio this evening for 30 seconds only to hear them talking about yep, Michael Vick.

Is there no self respect in professional sports right now where they can't say no to a dog killer coming back into the league? Even if the league opens the door for his return I would hope the individual teams set their bars slightly higher and avoid him like the plague.

Its not just the league either for entertaining the idea, its the talk show hosts who think they are doing their job by talking about it and hyping it up thinking that fans actually want to hear them talk about the soon to be ex con. Stop hyping up the guys return when in actuality I believe the NFL has not even considered letting him back. At this point, its not going to happen and it shouldn't happen.

Granted there is probably still a handful of people who would pay to see the loser play, a pocket of people who are accepting of this mans hellacious acts. Im a dog owner and it sickens me what he did still to this day. Quite frankly I want no part of a league who would have fans that would accept and even root for the guy.

If this guy is seriously allowed back into the NFL you can add them to the list of professional sports that I will just not watch. If other NFL fans are dog owners they should consider it too, would you really want this scumbag playing on your team? What if the Bills signed him, I would like to think that if we gave Marshawn Lynch hell for his run ins with the law that we would be outraged over them signing Michael Vick.

Just out of prison? No problem as long as you are a professional NFL player we take back dog killers. Nice league and great topic ESPN.

Bloggage

Yeah I know I haven't posted much lately and Im a week late on posting Martin Streek stuff I have on cassette. Its coming. Been really busy with preparations to move and just kinda sitting back for a while and letting the batteries recharge.

One thing about getting old stuff off cassette is that it takes time, rewinding, fast fowarding to get the right clips. Ill get it up by next weekend,

This week Ill get back into it, Ill have some Martin stuff this week, probably Friday, some Humble and Fred Fridays too which I have been lax on and this week the Bills start training camp so I may start giving my two cents about them.

Roy Halladay may be gone by the end of the week as well so I am counting on the readers to leave me some comments if I haven't seen it yet. In the meantime Im just taking some days off from the bloggage but Ill be back up and going by Wednesday at the latest.

In the mean time stick your comments below and enjoy the summer weather we have been promised, we will be gettting stuff out for a block sale next weekend on our street and getting rid of as much crap as possible so we don't have to move.it to the next place!.......BBM

The Summer Sampler

labatt_html

Labatts has won me over yet again. Since they moved their US headquarters to Buffalo we have gotten an amazing array of new choices from Labatt including my personal favorite the Honey Lager.

This summer I have become hooked on the Summer Sampler. The Summer Sampler includes four of Labatt's quality made for summer brews including:

Labatt Summer Ale (which I am enjoying one right now)

Labatt Twsit (with a twist of lime)- this is just a great addition and is probably my second favorite next to the Honey Lager, though, it may be my new favorite summer brew.

Summer Blonde

Honey Lager- since we can't get Sleeman's Honey Brown over the border this works as a close second to Sleemans.

Four great brews in one 2-4. Awesome. For a while I was all about the Molson but Labatt stepped up to the plate and delivered this mouth watering selection and Im ready to stock up for the winter with a few cases of the Summer Sampler since its so damn cheap right now too.

Check it out, The Twist goes great with salmon or chicken fresh off the grill.

Glenn Beck Loses It

Glenn Beck should be standing in line for mental healthcare very soon, this guy is such a pathetic excuse for a talk show host it makes me sick.

When this woman asks him what he would do about our broken healthcare system he absolutely loses it. He says nothing constructive because quite frankly he has no answers and neither do any of the other republicans.

If this clip doesnt prove to those of you siding with these nut jobs how pathetic they are I don't know what does. The way he talks to and blows this woman off is just amazing.

When ever any of these right wing hosts get challenged they resort to this type of stuff, Bill O'Reilly is another great example, instead of having an intelligent conversation and accepting another point of view they scream and yell because they have no tolerance, they have no answers because they are simply lunatics:

Note To The Jays and JP Riccardi

Original Jays Logo by you.

If this trading Roy Halladay happens, Im done. I have been a fan since I can remember watching baseball in the early to mid 80's and I have thought long and hard about what it means and while I can see both sides as far as keeping vs. trading our ace, I will simply say that to me you can not trade Roy Halladay and expect to keep myself and Im sure others as fans of the Toronto Blue Jays.

First off he is the face of the friggin franchise, trading him would be like trading Dave Steib or George Bell in their primes or releasing Joe Carter after 1993.

In short, Roy Halladay is the best player ever to dawn a Blue Jays uniform. How can an organization hungry for fans to sit inside a half empty stadium do that to its fan base?

I was actually considering buying tickets for a game coming up but honestly, Im holding off until I see what the organization does. If the organization decides to trade him, unless you are getting superstar, impact players in return, you might as well trade me along with him. Im done, I am done rooting for and wasting my hard earned money on the Toronto Blue Jays franchise.

A month and a half ago you had a team that was in first place by three games and needing only a deal to bolster the pitching and acquire a bat. You also had a team that was beginning to generate some buzz. Now, the team sits in 4th place with a huge hill to climb and the only thing being generated is the puke in my mouth every time I see this team lose. Trying to deal a month ago would have sparked the team, now you have to sell because of your inaction earlier when it could have stabilized and kept the team near to or on top of the division.

For this JP I say you need to be fired, nothing short of that will keep me as a fan of your mismanaged franchise. I have my back up team waiting and the nice thing is, they have a prayer in their division on a yearly basis. Maybe if you didn't sign Vernon Wells to an obscene contract you could scrape together enough for an extension for Halladay.

If Halladay is traded, Im going with the Atlanta Braves. They don't trade away their best players, they add players when they need them to secure the playoffs and they have a respectable front office willing to spend enough to win and ultimately make their fan base happy. Cito, do yourself a favor, get out now while the getting is good, if Doc is traded the ship is going to sink and JP should go down with it. As for me, the next time I am at Roger's Centre for a game could be wearing a Braves cap during interleague play. Sorry Toronto but I can't stomach the crap anymore.

Stingrays Long Course Meet

stingray_logo_3 by you.

If you are not doing anything special this weekend you can come check out the Cheektowaga Stingrays long course swim meet. Its the club I coach for.

Long course simply refers to the distance of the pool, Long course is swum in meters, its a true olympic size 50 meter pool. What makes our long course meet special is that it is the only outdoor long course meet in Western New York/Niagara region.

If you have a child interested in swimming its a fun one to come to and check it out. That is where I will be for the bulk of the rest of this weekend at Cheektowaga Town Park.

I still some Martin Streek clips to post that I haven't gotten to when I get a chance, hopefully for tomorrow night, just been way too busy but will make some time for Martin clips soon enough...otherwise have a good weekend BBM

WTF?

Original Jays Logo

WTF happened to this team? I haven't posted as mucn this year, more out of not wanting to jinx things and get too cocky but jeez, I don't think we can do much more damage by commenting on the state of affairs in Toronto.

Let me state first, this fall from grace is NOT Cito's fault. Cito has done everything but throw a kitchen sink on the field. He has had to with all the injuries, especially to the pitching staff, which leads me to my first point/question, and since we know that JP Riccardi reads BBM, maybe we will get an answer right from the top.

Why all the injuires? This isn't just a one year thing, this has been multiple years that this has been going on, last year it was more on the offensive side of the ball with Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay and Scott Rolen all spending time on the DL, this year I don't think I have ever seen more guys on the DL on the pitching side of the ball ever.

BJ Ryan was hurt the year before early on which threw the team into a tizzy. So my question is does Brad Arnsberg handle the pitchers appropriately? Maybe we need to look at a new pitching coach, maybe we need to look at upgrading the strength and conditioning coaches for the team or add that as a part of the teams off season regime.

One way or another the injuries have got to stop and I place the blame on the shoulders of the GM to either put the right personel in place to help condition these players and handle the pitchers properly or something.

This is not Gaston's fault, no team can overcome the injuries this team has seen to its ptiching staff. They have gone at least 10 different starters deep into the starting rotation. I would have to check but off the top of my head we have had the following guys on the mound starting so far this season and in spurts, all have pitched well at some point or another:

Brian Tallet

Roy Halladay

Brett Cecil

Robert Ray

Jesse Litch

Ricky Romero

David Purcey

Marc Rzepczynski

Brad Mills

Brian Burres

Casey Janssen

Scott Richmond

Thats 12 starters so far this season. Are we shooting for 20? Like I said, most of these guys have pitched well in spurts, Scott Richmond was 5-0 in April, Casey Janssen came back strong from a shoulder injury and then proceeded to land right back on the DL after a few promising starts. Brett Cecil and Ricky Romero are two outstanding young rookies who are showing their potential especially Romero who is 7-3 so far.

So based on the fact that Cito has had to pull 12 guys for the starting rotation out of his hat, Id say that 43-44 is pretty impressive.

The last month has gotten ugly for one simple reason, this team has not been in sync. One night the offense gets hot and the pitching lays and egg like yesterdays 10-9 loss and another day the pitching is adequate but the offense goes bye bye. Its a team searching for consistency and you could see it coming around the begiinning of June.

So my final thought then is why hasn't JP seeing the hype building around this team early on, gone out and made a move other than claiming David Delluci off waivers? Pedro Martinez is being scouted by the Phillies and will probably land in Philly, so tell me why we couldn't be looking at adding Pedro about 3 weeks ago? He may not be the pitcher he was 4 years ago, but he could still provide some quality innings and veteran leadership to a young staff in a division he is more than familiar with.

Take a chance JP, despite the losing lately there is still time, they are only 9 1/2 games out at this point, with all the losses lately, they should be 15 out. Take advantage of the fact that you are still within 10 games, go out and do something, trade one or two of the young arms that have shown something and get a big bat, try to move Alex Rios for a veteran Pitcher or two to add to the bullpen/rotation. This is still doable because we haven't played the East much yet and there is still a ton of potential in the schedule to gain some ground.

So, is JP reading? Don't trade Doc, do the right thing, get ownership to spend some money, if they spend it, people will come if this team turns it around and make a run for it. Last year you did the right thing and brought Cito back, now get him the tools to get it done.

Still In Shock

I woke up this morning to find out the news I missed when it broke last night that Martin Streek a long time and one of the most popular DJs for Toronto's CFNY took his life.

My jaw hit the floor and the more I thought about it today the worse I felt. This was a guy that I would tune into 102.1 every weekend to hear and really was one of the only reasons still left on CFNY for me to tune into. He was electric on the ariwaves and by all accounts he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

I met him a few times at the live to airs, emailed him and spoke via email but never really on a personal basis. What I can say is that I can see why so many are upset over the loss, he truly was a great guy and meant so much to the Toronto community, music scene and media/culture.

This loss for me, ranks up there with the day Jim Lorentz retired. Martin was one of those voices of a generation. He goes back 20 years on CFNY and deserved better than to get fired from the station. He made the live to airs what they are today.

You don't replace his voice over the air waves, you can try but you can't. You also can't replace the man who was Martin Streek, he was vibrant and loved what he did, he oozed CFNY, you could tell by listening to him, he had a passion for what he did and I think above all else, thats why people who listened loved him.

Here is a clip from an Edgefest in Toronto with Martin hanging out backstage:

This weekend starting Friday (in place of Humble and Fred Friday and Sunday Retro), I am going to post some old clips of Martin I have on cassette so tune in. Its a busy weekend so clips may not be on until late on those days, but if you know Martin, as he always reminded us "we go late".

Martin Streek So Full of Life

martin streek

Martin Streek was and always will be one of my favorite personalities on the radio, He always sounded so full of life and after meeting him numerous times at live to airs in Toronto you could see it. He was simply electric.

That why today when I woke up i had hold back tears to see that Martin had taken his own life. He was let go recently by CFNY 102.1 The Edge his long time job as late nigt host of the Thursday 30 and the weekend Live to Airs.

This was a guy who filled the air waves for a generation of 102.1 listeners and though I haven't listened as much as I used to, I still tuned in every Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday nights to hear the live to airs, he brought it to a whole new level.

For all of you wno knew him personally my heart goes out, for all of you who knew him from listening and see him out at the live to airs, well we are all probably feeling the same way, we lost someone once again, way too soon.

RIP Martin

Every Sunday I post a little retro tune and this week I dug up a band from the late 80's-early 90's by the name of the New Fast Automatic Daffodils, They had a minor hit here in the States and Canada with their song Stockholm off 1992's Body Exit Mind:

More Testimony on Single Payer

This is testimony from Dr. David Himmelstein, he is the Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard and is seen here testifying on how to reduce the cost of health insurance for employers, employees and families. He testified back in April in front of the HELP Subcommittee.

These are doctors speaking to the savings that we could see with a single payer system. If they don't know what the savings could be who doesn't?

Not only are they testifying and speaking about the cost savings but they also have researched the fact that medical care would actually improve since more of your dollar spent would go towards medical care instead of fighting with insurance companies to get paid/check to make sure that you are insured.

Nothing says the 4th of July better than this song....for me at least Good Vibrations says it all about summer and for some reason on the 4th of July I always start this tune in heavy play.

There is video of a Beach Boys July 4th concert in Washington DC floating out there somewhere with a killer live version of this, but this one is just as good, a liitle more of a jam session with clips of Brian Wilson's birthday party. Paul and Linda McCartney were also on hand during this.

This Is Not What We Want

Insur_Operation

This is not the healtcare bill millions of Americans want to see. Apparently law makers think it would be fun to fine people in a new healthcare bill if they choose not to buy "affordable" health insurance.

Come on, if these clowns in Washington can't come up with something better than this the people need to march on Washington and demand a special election to get them all out and that includes Barack Obama, the republicans, democrats and every other crooked bastard in that city

What good is a fine going to do? If someone can't afford it now, what makes them think a fine is going to get them any closer to being able to afford healthcare?

Whats affordable according to our lawmakers in Washington? They all get healh insurance for free, so tell us what "affordable" is. This is not single payer and if you are defining affordable based on what private companies charge now, thats not affordable.

I just lost my health insurance because we got a COBRA bill for $987 per month. My employer was willing to pay $387 per month for my wife to have coverage, there is no way I can afford the remaining $600 per month to cover me so I declined it. Go ahead fine me for it and see what happens. I won't pay the fine because I couldn't afford the huge insurance premium.

Go back to the table and come back with something that doesn't punish people. I can see the reason for fining people for no auto insurance, we need it in case someone is hurt in an accident, liability, it makes sense, me not getting health insurance hurts no one, other than the fact that people who do have it have to pay more because I can't afford to pay my doctor bill, therefore, costs go up.

The private insurance companies got us here, they raised rates and denied coverage to people to the point where people either A) couldn't afford it or B) people can't get coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Where is the end? If this bill passes, Im moving to Canada.

Single Payer Testimony

This is Dr Angell a senior lecturer on socialized medicine at Harvard Medical School. She puts a very sensible spin to the same ideas I have been posting about. If you are not going to listen to a Harvard Medical School professor who are you going to listen to if you are an opponent.

Notice the part where she gets into the fact that those countries that have single payer healthcare spend half as much as we do per person and health outcomes are better while offering more services.

Steve Montador, thats our free agent signing......I don't know. Yeah we got tougher, but we lost Spacek so we lost offense on the point. Not to mention Spacek goes in the division to of all teams...The Habs...damn.

So where does that leave us? Tougher, thats good, but again, please Darcy tell us you are not done, there are still names out there.

In the meantime, welcome to Buffalo Steve Montador! Sounds like he could be Zorro's enemy in the next Zorro movie. He and Craig Rivet are going to have to get along when they get to training camp.

Ed's Playbook

Ed Schultz is my new hero. This guy recently got his own show on MSNBC and all he has done since is give the middle class of this country a voice. In a political world where you have to be rich and a lobbyist willing to line the pockets of politicians to be heard, Big Eddie as we like to call him is becoming a big voice for the middle class.

His big thing is healthcare, which if you have been reading here lately, I have taken that on as well. this video though is from what he calls Ed's Playbook, he was once a college football star in this country. If Obama fails us, Im nominating Ed Schultz to lead a Middle Class party as a potential presidential candidate...I wonder if he'd accept?

In this clip he goes after Mark Sanford, who BTW still has not resigned. The delusional prick thinks that "god" is on his side...yeah....because if there is a god, he likes hanging out with those who have broken the bonds of marriage by cheating on their wife for a year..."god" really digs that sort of thing, he also digs lying and hippocrits as well according to Mr. Sandbag...oops Sanford....isn't there a commandment about they way he is holding god by his side?
