I Love an Honest Quote

mark T

As much as I hate the New York Yankees, I loved Mark Teixeira's quote after the Yankees home opener today:

“I’ve been petitioning the league to start in March for years. “Finally they let us start in March because everybody knows my Aprils,” Teixeira said. “It’s great to start this way. … Last year was awful, it was embarrassing.”

The Yankees opened their season in March for the first time ever and Teixeira was referring to his notoriously slow starts.

Lets hope he gets back to his usual Aprils starting tomorrow.

We Are a Dumbed Down Nation

I woke up this morning to this on the early shows:

Is that really all you have to do to get on TV anymore? I get it, its cute, but morning show worthy? I have a year and a half old daughter and you know what? She is way cuter and I would never try to A) Exploit her like this, how much money did her parents take for the interviews on the morning shows? B) Why is this news? It happens every day.....its because we are dumbed down in this country.

And while we are speaking of dumbed down....This waste of flesh is thinking about starting his own network:

He should call it CWCN, COME WATCH CRAZY NETWORK....Thats the only thing you can call it. The guy is a complete lunatic. But, he will attract the same horde of crazy that watches him on FOX, and believe me, people do watch him, though not as many as you'd think. He is losing sponsors on FOX News because, well, he is losing viewers. A lot of republicans actually think there is someone on that network who goes too far and that someone is Beck. He is actually too crazy for some republicans.

So as long as he does this, I mean really, don't just tease us Glenn, if you are going to do it, go large, bring Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin and O'Reilly without and then maybe FOX can be what they claim to be, Fair and Balanced.

The fact that Glenn Beck can even think of doing this though, says just how dumbed down this country really is.

The French Connection Song

I am five years old with oversized head phones and 45 spinning on the record player playing this song over and over, this is for Rick Martin, RIP

Richard Martin 1951-2011

What can I say, he was one of my favorite players growing up. If you are about my age or older he was a hockey icon in this community. His Jeresy in the rafters at HSBC speaks for itself. One of the first names I mention when someone asks me who the best Sabres of all time are. I had the chance to talk with Rick at the Sabres draft party a few years ago at HSBC. A great guy to talk to and was always willing to interact with fans. The Buffalo sports community lost one of the greats:

Going for Broke

Im going to come right out and say it......The Toronto Blue Jays will make the playoffs this year. They won 85 games last year and with Aaron Hill and Adam Lind returning to form, a break out season for Brandon Morrow and Travis Snider, arguably the strongest bullpen in the AL East with four potential closers and their new manager John Farrell who has all the tools o f a great manager, this team will at worst finish as the AL wild card this season.

My reasoning is simple. The Yankees and Rays both took steps backward, the Jays added depth that they haven't had over the last 15 years in guys like Octavio Dotel, John Rausch, Frank Francisco in the bullpen and Corey Patterson and Scott Posednik on the bench. Everyone knows this team is young and up and coming but its the vetarans they added in the offseason that will put this team over the top.

The Yankees who typically corner the free agent market didn't and they got older and developed more questions than answers for themselves. The Rays lost without getting equal talent to replace what they lost. Carl Crawford is a huge hole that they filled basically with Manny Ramirez....have fun with that.

So, mark my words, on March 13th, I have predicted the Toronto Blue Jays will make the playoffs this year for the first time since 1993.

Good Effort, Not Enough

I watched last night and came away shrugging my shoulders. Overall, how can you complain about the effort of the Buffalo Sabres last night? They fought hard but it wasn't enough. It was a tired hockey team and you could see their legs going from under them through the second and third period when they were getting trapped in their own zone.

There were several times it looked like Toronto was on the power play even though it was even strength, it was because Buffalo forwards were taking shifts that were way too long at time. If you are a tired hockey team 30-40 second shifts max. Im sure Lindy Ruff was going mad over that last night. Ill bet Mike Grier as much as I defend him, got stuck out there on at least 4 shifts last night for well over a minute....thats too long for him to be on the ice. A) hes not fast anymore, B) when hes fatigued, hes down right slow. Forget about experience, when you are tired and slow, thats a bad combination.

Tonight this team is in trouble. They are coming into the third game in four nights on short rest, losing an hour last night for the time change and a two hour bus ride back to Buffalo (assuming it was a bus ride, they probably flew but you get the point). Hopefully Gaustad is ready to go tonight because they lost 90% of their face offs last night and it was noticeable. Gaustad is the only guy at center who is capable of winning draws. Tim Connolly is useless and when they started letting Cody McCormick try faceoffs you knew they were in trouble. Winning faceoffs would be a big help for a tired team.

After beating the Bruins the other night they afforded themselves the chance to lose one of the two games this weekend. Last night was the one to win considering the hectic schedule, now they are in a bit of a corner. Lose tonight and you lose the grip on 7th probably and put yourself back into must win territory for Tuesday. Win tonight and you can get back a little cushion.

Anyone who wasn't thrilled with Miller last night probably has a gripe on maybe one of the four goals, The other three were defensive lapses and screens he had no chance on. Enroth is in tonight and hes a hot back up when he gets the start so hopefully Enroth will provide a little magic tonight and Gaustad can help them on facefoffs.

One thing is for sure, good effort isn't good enough, its got to be desparate and thats exactly what the Leafs were last night.

Dear Radio Station Formerly Known as CFNY

Just a suggestion, I know you have alienated just about everyone who used to listen to the station, but I have to get this off my chest. If you are going to find time to play this crappy Alexisonfire cover version of this classic:

Then find the time to play the original masterpiece so the kids know this songs true roots and meanings. Alexisonfire's version in a word sucks. Here is the true original, Midnight Oil and The Dead Heart:
