Football Is Here

NFL

Of course before hockey comes football and for football being a distant third on my favorite sports I have done quite well in recent years with fantasy teams. My drafts for my two leagues are this weekend and honestly, I don't think I will have the one-two punch at quarterback I had last year with Tom Brady and Derek Anderson. This was my team from last year:

Quarterback: Tom Brady (NE), Derek Anderson (Cle), David Carr (NYG), and Cleo Lemon (Mia). (if it was a keeper league I would have been set for years as I had Jamarcus Russel and Brady Quinn but with injuries and bye weeks I needed a few guys who could play in Carr and Lemon.)

Wide reciever: Reggie Brown (Phi), Mark Clayton (Bal), Leveranues Coles (NYJ), Bobby Engram (Sea), Larry Fitzgerald (Ari), Brandon Jones (Ten), Muhsin Muhammad (Chi), and Vincent Jackson (SD)

Running Back: Reggie Bush (NO), Marshawn Lynch (Buf), Julius Jones (Dal), and Kenton Keith (Ind)

Tightend: Donald Lee (GB) and Kellen Winslow (Cle)

Kicker: Shayne Graham (Chi)

Defense: Pittsburgh

I needed a ton of wide recievers as I had a ton of injuries throughout the year but some how I pulled it off, mainly on the fact that Brady and Anderson were just incredible. Easily the 1st and 2nd rated QBs in all of football last year.

I will have my complete drafts after the picks are made this weekend.

End Of Season Fantasy Hockey Awards

Congradulations to all who participated in the league! It was a fun year and hopefully we can assemble the same group this year. This would be my list of awards for this fantasy season:

Championship Winner: Road Apples (My team)

Second Place Winner: 50 Mission Cap

Third Place Winner: Firefox

Presidents Trophy Winner: Cougars

Rookie of the Year (New to Fantasy Hockey): Firefox was in second most of the season until the last two weeks when I over took him. Was in a battle for first for much of the first half.

Biggest Comeback: Roadapples- I have to give that to myself, midway through the season I could have gone either way, to the bottom or made the playoffs, well, I didn't lose over the last 10 weeks and went from 8th to 2nd and eventually won.

Biggest Disappointment: Go Mets! My brother in laws team, I expected so much more Dan.

Biggest Surprise: Firefox, first year and competes for first most of the year. The kids got talent!

If anyone knows how to set up a keeper league on Yahoo I would love to do one of those with Fantasy Hockey, is it possible?

Again good year and if anyone can think of end of season awards for the league let me know!

Final Fantasy Hockey Update

Barring a miracle comeback tonight, I am going to win my fantasy hockey league come sunrise tomorrow morning. I came a long way back and haven't lost in the final 10 weeks. My opponent 50 Mission Cap (also a Hip fan no doubt) was a worthy opponent for the championship, he was in the top three of the league all season long.

Today wraps up the championship final two weeks of the playoff and tomorrow I will declare the Road Apples MVP's of the 2008 Fantasy Hockey League Season.

Over the final two weeks leading my team down the stretch was Joe Thorton with 8 G and 3 A for 11 points and Antoine Vermette with 6 G 4 A for 10 points (where did he come from this year), Thomas Vanek had 3 power play goals over that stretch and Alex Burrows provided the rough and tumble with 33 penalty minutes.

In goal, Henrik Lundqvist picked up Vesa Toskala's mess and had 3 wins, a shutout and a 1.79 goals against.

It was great year and anyone who wants to sign up for next years send me your email and Ill contact you in August.

Fantasy Hockey Update

My fantasy hockey team just completed possibly the greatest comeback in history. No it wasn't a worst to first but it was an 8th to 2nd come back. It included coming back from a below .500 record just 9 weeks ago to finish with a 135-100-41 record. I beat the second place team Firefox owned by my friend Hank who can not be happy this morning.

I won the last 8 weeks to come in and get the bye week this week. The job isn't done yet, now that we have the bye week, its time to go after the championship. No prisoners will be taken, this team is out for blood now.

This weeks leading contributors included:

Joe Thorton with 7 points, (2 G, 5 A) and a +6 and Eric Staal with 6 points, (2G, 4 A) and a +2

In goal:

Henrik Lundqvist had 2 wins and a 1,26 GAA with a shutout.

My guys are getting hot at the right time, hopefully this bye week won't cool them off.

Fantasy Hockey Update

I did it, my team moved into second place last week and defeated the first place team overall. This doesn't get me anything yet though as this week I face the team I just overtook for second and the bastard is only two or three points behind, so lose this week and Im in third, win and I have a bye week. So Firefox is standing in my way this week and so far so good, Joe Thorton had a four point night last night.

Top performers last week:

Jason Pomenville had a 5 point week and Vesa Toskala, yes the Leaf netminder had 3 wins and a shutout. Good for him. At the pace the Leafs are going they may catch the Sabres.

Fantasy Hockey Update

I didn't get to it earlier in the week so here it is. Last week I was perfect. The Road Apples went 10-0-2 and made a significant move up the standings. I am now sitting in third place just 6 points out of second.

Add to the fact that I am playing the first place team this week and the second place team next week and I have an excellent shot at getting a first round bye when the playoffs start.

So far this week? 10-1-1......

My leaders last week included:

Thomas Vanek with 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists)

Henrik Lundqvist 2 wins, 1.50 GAA and 1 shut out.

I also had Eric Staal with 6 points and Brendan Morrow with 6 points.

Hopefully I can keep the momentum going and catch my good friend Firefox for second.

Fantasy Hockey Update

This week in my fantasy hockey league my team (the Road Apples) dominated the week against a team that was battling for 5th spot. I now find myself with some breathing room between 5th and 7th place. Not that I want a bad week but I could have a bad week and still have a chance to come out still in 5th. I have a 14 point lead on the 6th place team and I play the fourth place 50 Mission Cap this week who is only 2 points ahead of me.

If I can keep moving up and get into the top two I can secure a bye. It would be nice to get in the top 3 so I don't draw a top seed in the first round.

This past week I went 7-1-4 and now have 257 points, two out of 4th place and 23 out of 2nd. Its doable, but I have to keep winning.

Last weeks leaders:

Thomas Vanek finally started earning his keep with 5 goals and Henrik Lundqvist had 1 win, a 1.00 GAA and .967 Save %.

Fantasy Hockey Update

Another winning week last week going 6-2-4 vaulted me into 6th place and playoff contention. My goal is to get into top 4 and fight it out for a bye week but that is going to take some doing with not too much longer left until the playoffs start in March, right now my team the Road Apples sits in 6th place, 2 points ahead of 5 For Fighting and 3 points out of third. So it is within striking distance.

This past weeks top performers:

Jason Pominville 2 G, 3 A for 5 points and Brendan Morrow 2 G, 2 A for 4 points.

Henrik Lunqvist continues to lead the way in goal with 2 wins and a 2.35 GAA

This week is huge, at some point I have to make a run for 3rd, hopefully my boys will keep the momentum rolling.

Fantasy Hockey Update

Last week was a down turn for the Road Apples. Firefox had a little beginners luck and throttled me. I finished the week 3-9 which dropped me down to 9th place overall. 61-64-19 under .500 for the second time this season.

My most productive players: Jason Pominville with a goal and four assists for five points. Joe Thorton decided to hibernate last week or something he had just one point and was a minus one.

In goal Vesa Toskala had one win and .967 save percentage. Henrik Lundqvist had a win and a shutout but his goals against was 3.36 with a .867 save percentage.

Guys who I need to step it up: Joe Thorton, Thomas Vanek and Henrik Lundqvist. Markus Naslund would be nice to see throw a few in as well.

Injuries: Anton Volchenkov is on IR and Thomas Holstrom is day to day which hurts offensively.

Fantasy Hockey Update

This week saw my team the Road Apples leap frog two teams and vault myself into 6th place and a playoff spot. I finished the week 7-3-2 and now stand with 124 points, one point ahead of 7th and 5 points back of 5th place. First place is only 13 points away and I face the first place team this week.

My leading scorers for this week included: Joe Thorton with 1 goal and 5 assists and Nik Antropov with 4 goals and plus 3. No surprises there.

Goaltending: All three of my goalies Vesa Toskala, Henrik Lunqvist and my recent addition of Carey Price had a win a piece. Lunqvist had a shutout.

At this point, Im content without making any major moves as Im moving up in the standings and everyone except one defencemen is healthy. Im waiting for Thomas Vanek to start finding the back of the net and it would be nice for Jason Pominville to start getting back on a 30-40 goal pace again. Otherwise my worst stat for the year has been +/-. I was counting on so much more from Vanek who led the league last year in that category.
