RIP Corey Haim, Haim passed away this past week, yet another all too early death from something that is usually prescibed to help us....prescription medications.
From 1989's Dream A Little Dream, Rock On by Michael Damian. Dream A Little Dream featured Haim, Corey Feldman and Meredith Salenger.
Rock On which was probably the signature tune off that soundtrack was originally written in 1974 by David Essex. Its been featured in numerous movies and television shows including The Sopranos and Cold Case.
The song has also been covered by Damian, Def Leppard, Smashing Pumpkins, and my favorite a live version by Love and Rockets.

Sunday Retro (On Monday)
Had to do this Monday due to a busy weekend, saw this video as my eyes were being held up by some weak toothpicks Saturday night.
Its The Cure's Why Can't I Be You. If I have the story right, this was the last time anyone would see Robert Smith dance in a video, after he saw it, he thought he looked ridiculous and put a stop to him dancing in any future videos. Of course those costumes couldn't have contributed to Roberts feelings about dancing?
Maybe Alan Cross can confirm that one.

Sunday Retro
I realize I have been sick with the flu for most of the week but fully recovered. I haven't done this in a few weeks either, Sunday Retro this is my favorite day of the week usually for this post so I will try to get back on track.
This week is just a tune I heard on Radio Nigel last night that struck me as one of those rare tracks you hear once every blue moon but when you do you remember every time you've heard it, its got some great vocals on it as well as provided by Sarah Cracknell.
The song is actually a cover of the original Neil Young song of the same name. Released in 1990 by St. Etienne, Neil Young originally was supposed to have written the song for Graham Nash. Neil Young originally released it in 1970. I love the Neil original, one of my favorite Neil Young tracks but St. Etienne takes the song and does an amazing job of just creating a whole new feel to the song.

The SOTU was this past week and Obama is trying to get the "just say no" Republicans on board to help instead of hinder solutions to big problems. Why does it have to be So Political? Made me think of this little tune by Canada's Spirit of the West for Sunday Retro. Released in 1988 on their album Labour Day, Political was a big hit up north and a crown pleaser when they play it live to this day. Hope they make a Buffalo stop this year!Category: Sunday Retro
Sunday Retro
I have not been keeping up with some of my more regular posts lately like Sunday Retro, this thing called life gets in the way of posting some weeks so I wanted to take today and get caught up on things like this.
Every Friday, my friend Fred Patterson posts a little clip from conversation on 99.3 The Fox, a Vancouver rock station. The DJ there that Fred chats with every Friday is a former CFNY DJ Neil Morrison, or as some of the Buffalo/Southern Ontario readers would know him as Brother Bill.
Well, when I listened to the clip on Friday, Neil brought up my site, Buffalo Boy, specifically my post about the disgusting comments made by Pat Robertson.
Neil mentioned a lyric from an early 80's Depeche Mode tune, Blaphemous Rumours. This one goes out to you Neil, I think the Sabres are out there this week, hopefully they won't beat up the Canucks too badly. Go check out the post over on Freddie P and check out 99.3 The Fox too for Neil.

Sunday Retro (on Monday)
I have been not keeping up with Sunday Retro lately and it will get better. This week I figured I would go with some Joe Strummer and the Clash. On December 22nd, 2002 an icon was lost way too early. He was in the midst of a resurgence with his new band the Mescaleros and there were rumblings of a Clash reunion...that didn't happen. Joe Strummer left us at the age of 50. Way too young.
He was my John Lennon, my Elvis Presley, My Kurt Cobain. Joe Strummer was that influential as he led as the great Martin Streek, who passed away this year, used to say the Greatest Band of All Time, The Clash:Category: Sunday Retro

I got my hands on a copy of the recently released Elvis Costello and the Attractions Live at the El MaCombo in Toronto last week and let me tell you as far as live records go, this one is right up there at the top of the best live albums of all time.
I have always been a huge fan of Elvis Costello and this song live at Top of the Pops in 1977 was one of the first songs that turned me on to him, Red Shoes.

Sunday Retro (On Monday)
I went to spend the nicest day of the year (who knew that would happen in November) at a bowling alley yesterday with Stingrays Swim Club. It was a fun afternoon and by the time I got home I wanted to enjoy what little of the day that was left and cooked out on the grill.
So, I didn't get to Sunday Retro. I was listening to one of if not the ultimate 80's band. When someone says 80s music these guys are one of the first five out of most peoples mouth including mine.
Duran Duran was one of the first bands i loved growing up. They were so good, you had to say their name twice. They had a great beat you could dance to, just enough guitar edginess to make it cool and their videos always had hot chicks, yeah baby! Including this one, 1981's Girls on Film:

Tomorrow is Day of the Dead and what better tune than Joy Division's Dead Souls. This is some very rare live footage of the song, the sound quality isn't the best but it adds a little vinegar to a song that wasn't supposed to be pleasant to listen to in the first place.
This has been covered by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails as well as Peter Murphy frontman of Bauhaus. Nine Inch Nails brought the house down at Woodstock '94 with their cover of this which was on The Crow soundtrack.
