Interesting Day!
Wow, first and earthquake, then some of the most oppressive heat of the season, then tornados, what more could one possibly ask for here in Western New York? Blizzards anyone?

The Blizzard of All Blizzards: 1977
Whenever the weather gets bad around here all I have to do is remember the Blizzard of '77, I was only 4 then but i do remember drifts of snow up to our roof. It was by far and away the worst storm ever.
The stuff we get around here now is childs play. If something like that hit now we'd probably broken by it because frankly we have'nt seen anything close to it since.
This slide show is a great representation of what it looked like back then, most of us, no matter what our age was or what we were doing will not forget:

Winter I Can Live With
This is a winter I can live with so far. If anyone is keeping track today was the first day of winter, the shortest day of the year. The days get longer from here and so far can anyone complain? We had a couple rough days but nothing terrifying yet.
Today it was a very light yet as I thought to myself pretty snow. It didn't bother anything and with no wind it was actually comfortable outside, your ears didn't feel like they would fall off without a hat on and it was quite nice for December 21st.
I can live with 25-30 degrees and very light snow, just enough to make the lights look nice as people say. That and no wind and we have it made. Unlike last year if anyone remembers I don't think the wind stopped between November and April, this year we have had it pretty good.
Maybe I spoke too soon but hey, its all downhill from here, we gain four minutes of daylight between now and New Years Day. YEAH!

Bill Gates: Hurricane Stopper....But Should We?
Just when we thought Bill Gates couldn't become more powerful he proves that maybe he has a little too much money. He now claims that he has come up with a way to stop hurricanes. Thats a claim that at first glance most would say....okay great thats a good thing.
But, lets think about this for a few minutes before we give Gates a round of applause and the go ahead to play "God". Has he or anyone else involved in his weather control project stopped to think if they should stop hurricanes? Hurricanes are massive systems that release a tremendous amount of the atmosphere's pent up energy. If they were meant to be stopped there would be a switch or trigger associated with them. They are a natural phenomenom that despite the damage they cause, are necessary for the rain the provide, the cleansing of the atmosphere that takes place in their wake. I can see the want to do it, to save lives and save property damage but really, is it the hurricanes fault that we as humans are stupid enough to live where they do the most damage? That we have to live right on top of the coastlines where they impact the most. Hurricanes came way before we did, maybe its our lifestyles we have to change before we go trying to control the weather in extreme ways. Who knows how it would impact other weather patterns on a global scale. Scientists said in the article that they doubt this will accomplish the goal that Gates has set out to do which is good news, but we should seriously stop and think if this kind of thing should even be considered. Stick to computers Bill. Finally, Hot Weather and Schweddy Balls
Ah yes, the mercury climbs and it means though it ever so late into the summer we finally have the season for SNL - Sweaty Balls
When summer gets hot and sticky I am reminded of the classic SNL clip of Alec Baldwin talking about his Schweddy Balls. You Tube is a prick about SNL stuff so click on the above link to see those Schweddy Balls.

Miss Summer? Go To The Arctic
If this is what global warming is going to do to our small section of the globe then we better hurry up and find a way to start reversing the trend. Of course it may be too late to stop any long lasting effects.
If you miss summer check this out, kids are swimming in the Arctic Ocean this summer. Im assuming that has not happened often if ever. With temperatures reaching close to 90 in and around the Arctic Circle there has been record melting of ice through July and peak melt doesn't happen until September.
Meanwhile, here in WNY and Southern Ontario we have had abnormally cool temps and monsoonal time conditions. Time to move to the Arctic Circle to get some sun and warmth I guess.Category: Global Warming | News | Weather
Back To Reality
The above normal temperatures and the balmy weather for November are about to come to a close. Tomorrow is back to normal, back to reality of this time of year, dark, damp and ugly. Today was still at least comfortable temperature wise despite the monsoonal rains that came in.
Tomorrow Im hoping on my way back from Rochester its not winters icy blast. Just think, in about 5 weeks, we will be at the shortest day of the year and ready for days to slowly start getting longer again. 5 more weeks before we start eeking back daylight one minute at a time. Too bad its about 5 more months of crapstacular weather.

October Surprise 2 Years Ago
Its been two years now since the October Surprise snow storm. I remember my drive home that day. A drive that normally takes 15 minutes took 3 hours. I quickly cancelled my homecare visit as tree branches were collapsing on either side of my car as I was driving down streets in Amherst attempting to get to my visit.
This video that someone shot, accurately portrays the carnage of that night. I got home to a sparking electrical wire in our backyard. Half our street went without power, we were on the half with power. The only thing we lost was TV, the satellite went out for a few hours.
I went out to try to brush it off when I noticed the sparking wire overhead so I figured a night without TV would be nothing compared to getting electrocuted.
It will be a storm that will be remembered for a long time to come, no it wasn't the windiest, no it wasn't the snowiest, no it wasn't the longest lasting, but it was the earliest, catching all of us by surprise:
